I didn't manage to get a photo of T Glitter as he didn't arrive in the studio until we'd already begun. He made me slightly nervous with his careening about and nonsense talking, and he managed to knock over microphones and kick the keyboard plug out of the wall. But, as always, he delivered what was needed.
When we studied motion, we saw that with respect to time, position and velocity had a certain relationship. Velocity is the slope of the curve on a (t,x) graph and change in position is the area under the curve on a (t,v) graph.
Work and Force have the same relationship, except that the variable that relates them is not time but rather distance. This is convenient, since doing work against a conservative force stores potential energy. If you take the area under the curve on a (r,F) graph (where r is distance), you get the work done (and therefore the negative of potential energy.) We'll use this trick in the next few slides to see how we can find the potential energy caused by doing work against ANY conservative force. In addition, we can take the derivative of work done by a force (or the derivative of negative potential energy) to get us what the force causing the change was. It's nice like that.
