as a project in calculus, we were given a list of ingredients and the measurements were set as limits that we had to solve. it was fun. :)

Was it Newton or Leibnitz that discovered the calculus? Turns out it doesn't matter: they're both delicious in their own way

The Postcard
A postcard bearing no publisher's name that was posted in Eastbourne on Tuesday the 24th. July 1934 to:
Mrs. Stevens,
17 Maddox Street,
London W1.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Imperial Hotel
Tuesday.
Jane & I are enjoying
ourselves here, but only
able to take one week
after all.
Hope you are all busy
and will be able to take
a holiday.
It does make such a
difference, even a few
days away.
We are feeling very fit.
Love to you & Billy
From J & V".
The Execution of a Terrorist
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 24th. July 1934, a Czechoslovakian socialist was hanged in Vienna just three days after bombing a railway, as the Dollfuss government began carrying out its threat to execute convicted terrorists.
A Presidential Visit to Hawaii
Also on that day, President Roosevelt arrived in Hawaii, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit there.
Roosevelt received Territorial Governor Joseph Poindexter aboard the USS Houston, but did not actually go ashore until the following day.
Hans Hahn (Mathematician)
The 24th. July 1934 was not a good day for Hans Hahn, because he died on that day.
Hans, who was born in Vienna on the 27th. September 1879,
was an Austrian mathematician who made contributions to functional analysis, topology, set theory, the calculus of variations, real analysis, and order theory.
The Academic Career of Hans Hahn
In 1898 Hahn became a student at the Universität Wien, starting with the study of law. In 1899 he switched over to mathematics, and spent some time at the universities of Strasbourg, Munich and Göttingen.
In 1902 he took his Ph.D. in Vienna.
He was appointed to the teaching staff in Vienna in 1905. After 1905/1906 as a stand-in for Otto Stolz at Innsbruck and some further years as a Privatdozent in Vienna, he was nominated in 1909 Professor Extraordinarius in Czernowitz, at that time a town within the empire of Austria.
After joining the Austrian army in 1915, he was badly wounded in 1916 and became again Professor Extraordinarius, now in Bonn. In 1917 he was nominated a regular Professor there, and in 1921 he returned to Vienna with this title, where he stayed until his early death in 1934 at the age of 54, following cancer surgery. He had married Eleonore Minor in 1909 and they had a daughter, Nora, born in 1910.
Hans Hahn as a Philosopher
Hans was also interested in philosophy, and was part of a discussion group concerning Mach's positivism with Otto Neurath and Phillip Frank prior to the First World War.
In 1922, he helped arrange Moritz Schlick's entry into the group, which led to the founding of the Vienna Circle, the group that was at the centre of logical positivism in the 1920's. Within the Vienna Circle, Hahn was also known (and controversial) for using his mathematical and philosophical work to study psychic phenomena; according to Karl Menger, he sometimes openly advocated further research into extrasensory perception while lecturing.
Hahn's contributions to mathematics include the Hahn–Banach theorem and the uniform boundedness principle. Other theorems include:
the Hahn decomposition theorem;
the Hahn embedding theorem;
the Hahn–Kolmogorov theorem;
the Hahn–Mazurkiewicz theorem;
the Vitali–Hahn–Saks theorem.
In 1921 Hans received the Richard Lieben Prize. In 1926 he was President of the German Mathematical Society. In 1928 he was an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Bologna.
