This slide shows the math of getting the equation for gravitational potential energy from the equation for the force of gravity. Not surprisingly, you integrate. The left side shows the integral of the simpler equation mg, and the right side the more complex Newton's Law of Gravitation equation. Note that this is a definite integral so it gives us a value for deltaU as you move from a distance of ro to a distance of rf from the object that's pulling you. As on the previous slide, I've left the equation for potential energy at a single location positive. We'll understand where the negative sign that we always use comes from on the next slide.
