Calamba City, 20 September 2008—A Greenpeace Water Patrol activist removes a pail of rubbish taken from Laguna Lake, from his kayak after conducting a clean up on on World Coastal Clean Up Day today. Greenpeace volunteers and youth from Laguna Province lead a clean up of floating trash in and around Laguna Lake, 54 kilometers south of Manila, the largest lake in the Philippines and the second largest inland freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, which has been declared in danger of becoming biologically dead in five years. Threats include garbage dumps, untreated sewage, and various discharges from establishments and factories along its tributaries. The clean up was conducted even as the volunteers called on concerned government agencies to also protect Laguna Lake from less visible but equally dangerous chemical and organic pollutants. © Greenpeace
