The Rizal House in the City of Calamba is a reproduction of the original Spanish Colonial-style, two-storey house where Jose P. Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines was born on June 19, 1861. The original Rizal ancestral house took two years for Francisco Mercado, Rizal's father to built. The Spanish authorities confiscated the house in 1891. Paciano Rizal, brother of Jose P. Rizal reoccupied the house during the Philippine Revolution, but lost it again to the friars. It was subsequently sold, destroyed in World War II and was finally demolished. By Executive Order of President Elpidio Quirino, a replica of the birthplace of Jose Rizal commenced with funds mainly contributed by school children in the Philippines and was supervised by Architect Juan F. Nakpil in 1949. As a reconstruction of the original house, the house was a faithful reconstruction of the original house which occupies the same area and the same materials. The building was inaugurated on June 19, 1950 and served as repository of Rizal's memorabilia. The Rizal Shrine is a typical bahay na bato for upper-class Filipinos built during the Spanish Colonial era. The lower portion is made of stone and bricks while the upper part consists of hard wood. It has sliding windows made out of capiz shells. The outside wall is painted in green (originally white) and the roof is made of red tiles.

Calamba Church, is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. It is located adjacent to Rizal Shrine and is known as the christening site of José Rizal. Jesuit Missionaries in 1757 purchased a big portion of land called Hacienda de San Juan for their missions but the parish was only established in 1779 by the Franciscan Friars upon gaining independence from the parochial church of Cabuyao. The stone church was originally built in 1859 but destroyed during the Second World War. The reconstruction of the church of Calamba was headed by Fr. Eliseo Dimaculangan. The original altar was burned in 1862 but immediately rebuilt by Fr. Leoncio Lopez. The church of Calamba is a stone church built under the Baroque style. It has several stained glasses, two of which are in the church entrance depicting St. Dominic and San Lorenzo Ruiz. Other stained windows depicts the seven holy sacraments of the Church such as baptism, reconciliation, confirmation and among others.

Jose Rizal
There is absolutely no doubt that Jose Rizal is Philippines national hero. He was born in the Philippines, in Calamba, Laguna province, and was 35 years old when he was executed by the Spanish. He spoke 22 languages, not only did he master languages but was also an academic, artist, scientist and surgeon, but above all else he was a nationalist.
Through his extraordinary diversity and national pride he wrote many items depicting the cruelty of the Spanish over the oppressed Filipino people. By doing this he also made himself a target. When the Philippine Revolution started on 26th August 1896, Jose Rizal was one of the first to be rounded up and thrown into the dungeons at Fort Santiago. It was during his final days in Fort Santiago, that he penned his final poem, one that will be remembered forever. It was untitled originally but is now commonly known as Mi Ultimo Adios , My Ultimate Goodbye.
Jose Rizal was executed on Dec 30, 1896 by a Spanish firing squad. The Rizal Shrine now stands in Fort Santiago in honour of Dr Jose Rizal, hero of the Philippines.
