On the CTA's 75th birthday, a 4000 series train glides into the Washington & Wells station. A great day to celebrate the CTA!
CTA's freight train with coal hoppers from Lill Coal, located along the north side mainline. The train is on the gauntlet track (which provided extra clearance to the electrified third rail for the freight cars), using the overhead wire for power.

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) 4000-Series car no. 4271 (Cincinnati Car Co., 1914-1924) is seen leading a two-car loop special in celebration of the Transit Authority's 75th anniversary. Seen here at Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren Station, the historic train looks right at home in front of the historic Fisher Building (completed 1896) and the Rothschild Building (aka the Goldblatt's Building, completed 1912)!

They used to be "the green limousines"...then they advanced to these Flexible CTA buses. I really enjoy the buses with the exhaust pipes on the roof. I despise those that have exhaust in the bottom rear. Do you remember the accordion green limousines? With turns I always thought they would tip over. =)

CTA has wrapped four cars of the 5000 series in a retro scheme from the 1950's. Mercury Green, Croydon Cream and Swamp Holly Orange were familiar on the rapid transit for years. This project was sponsored my the Museum of Science and Industry in recognition of CTA's 75th Anniversary. Here the train is northbound at Armitage on the Red Line.
CTA Baldwin-Westinghouse locomotives S-104, S-105 rest at Skokie Shop after being retired from freight duties and being repainted in November 1973. They continued to work at Skokie Shop until sold to Toledo Edison in 1978.

CTA electrics at the Illinois Railroad Museum with 1948 St Louis PCC 4391 and 1951 Marmon-Herrington 9631 on Saturday, October 156th, 2022.
Another trio of color images of the CTA Stockyards Branch from the camera of William Hoffman circa 1957. I believe this view looks west from the Halsted platform. Everything in this scene is gone today, although one original multi-story building from the former Swift complex survived until 2022. Also the bank building which is the subject of the billboard at left still exists on Halsted.
This was a duplicate slide from one of the many slide sets sold by the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society www.shore-line.org/ back in the 80s / 90s. And if you are interested in the history of rail transit / passenger rail in Chicago and have not seen their quarterly publication First and Fastest, you're missing out!
