A Cmac, come si chiama nel dialetto ferrarese la cittadina di Comacchio, le superfici quiete dei canali, i ponti seicenteschi che si specchiano nell’acqua e le casette color pastello ricordano una Venezia in scala ridotta.

Appena arrivato a Comacchio il primo rito del turista, di solito, è salire le scalinate del celebre Trepponti, antica porta fortificata della città per chi proveniva dal mare, ma la vista più bella si gode invece dal ponte degli Sbirri, il cui nome curioso si deve alla vicinanza alle antiche prigioni. Soprattutto al tramonto è pronto a svelarsi con una luce nuova, che riflette le tinte infuocate del cielo.

Meeting at CMAC with Civil Affairs and some NGO’s
- UN will meet with NGO’s concerning Internally displaced Person’s (IDP’s). Iraqi refugees have taken over an orphanage. Need to relocate refugees. IDP’s are just showing up at M.P.’s checkpoints and looking for help. They try to move in with the G.I.’s.
There were two Iraqi women present with a little boy. Apparently they were looking for help as well. Before the meeting General Strock was walking by them and he stopped and fished an orange out of his pocket and offered it to the boy. It was a spontaneous gesture and it elicited a big smile from the boy, as he accepted the orange, and from General Strock as he gave it to him. General Strock must have gotten the orange at breakfast this morning and was planning on eating it himself.
“Queen-for-a-day” feel to the meeting. (This was an U.S. daytime TV show from back in the late 1950’3-early 1960’s or so. The premise was a live studio audience and three women “contestants” who told their hard luck stories. The reaction from the audience decided the “winner” who received various items that related to resolving her problem. Even as a kid I remember reacting to this show. Like viewing a car wreck; a morbid curiosity.)

Franz, the “garbage guy”, (another Corps of Engineers civilian) saw 15-18 cluster bombs at a garbage dumpsite. It is unsure how they got there. A little girl was hurt when one of them exploded. This UXO is “beer can” in size, yellow in color, and affects a football field size area when it explodes. The size and color attract kids who are very curious. Great. Those damn things have no business being used, especially in an urban environment with so many civilians present.
(I saw a destroyed Iraqi tank being picked up in the green zone recently; some of Franz’s good work.)
The de-Baathification process is unsettling. Franz said that the lead Iraqi that he has been working with, a former Iraqi Army Lt. General, came to their last meeting, read a letter of protest about the policy which now prevents him from working with us, and walked out. Now what will he and the others just like him do? They may have been too close to Saddam’s regime, but they know how to get things done. They know the system and people. Now they may have to go over to the dark side.
A raw water pumping station was fixed twice and looted again according to the Civil Affairs folks. General Strock responds,
“Fix it again and have an ambush set up for the looters”.
The other officers, who know General Strock, laugh and one says,
“The General is showing his Ranger training”.
A reference to the Army Ranger patch on General Strock’s uniform designating that accomplishment earlier in his career.
Later someone mentioned that General Strock couldn’t line up a Military Police escort for a drive out to Baghdad City Hall for a meeting. So, the General got in an SUV with his driver, chambered a round in his M-9 pistol and said,
“Let’s go”.
And go they did. It’s only a ten minute ride across the Tigris River, but an armed escort is required.

The standard factory-built high-roof minibus with 16 seats, mainstay of so many operators in the 1990s and 2000s but rare now as rust killed them off. Quicksilver inevitably had one among the large fleet of minibuses operated in the early years.

The earlier release of a Belmont has been followed up by the slightly more common estate and also the hatchback, which I have but am yet to build. Paint is Royal Blue, a Vauxhall colour but from a later era.

The classic 1990s minicab. The real F40 FUD is a diesel Bluebird that by some miracle has escaped that fate and is still on the road. Its registration must be worth a bit to a Ferrari F40 owner.

More experimentation with colour shift paint, this time an Auto Extreme 'multi-tone' green/purple very similar to MG Rover Monogram Shot Silk with quite a dramatic colour changing effect. Only one ZS was ever finished in this paint and is also the only automatic V6, a special build for an MG Rover director's wife who had an auto-only licence.
CMAC Model Railways 1/76 3D print - Ford Escort Mk2 estate
A basic Escort painted in Nevada Beige, the colour of the Mk1 Fiesta that was my first car and has been modelled by Oxford Diecast. While clearing out the garage I found some cans of this paint from when I had the Fiesta and despite being over 20 years old they still held pressure. The finish was terrible but wet sanding and a thick coat of lacquer produced an acceptable result.

Another Tagora, bringing my collection of them to three. This one is finished in Mazda Copper Red, very similar to the attractive Peony Red of the real car that is one of just two currently taxed.

Finished in a very bright gloss yellow from Auto Extreme to represent a Trophy Yellow car once owned by a friend that sadly now appears to have been scrapped.

The first and so far only Saab in the CMAC range. The windscreen was a particular challenge on this one due to its unusual shape and looks better in the flesh than the photo. SAA 816V would be an apt registration for a Saab 16-valve but doesn't exist in reality.

The facelifted first-generation Orion, authentically finished in Ford Olympic Gold. CMAC have modelled the original version too, along with the contemporary Escort in hatchback, estate and van form.

One of CMAC's first 1/76 scale models and a little crude compared with later releases. DWK 269Y is an elderly former British Rail van used as a service vehicle by Quicksilver in the early 2000s.

A very unusual subject and an illustration of the advantages of 3D printing as, like the real car, it is an evolution from the standard Landcrab via the Australian Kimberley/Tasman. This prototype was put together in 1971 as a proposal for a luxurious Vanden Plas-badged version of the Austin 1800, but was never considered for production as the BL range already contained several luxury saloons and remained unique. Happily, it does survive and is roadworthy, surprisingly not at Gaydon but in private ownership in Scotland.

Finished in Hyundai Sky Blue, left over from the Getz my sister used to own, but similar to Chrysler's own metallic blue featured on the real AUY 200W.

Finished in Rustoleum Colour Shift Galaxy Green, similar to the green shift paint available on the real Primera GT. These paints look much better in the flesh than in photos: the camera seems to emphasise the flakiness that is much less apparent in reality and struggles to capture the colour-changing effect.

Finished in Tara Green, not strictly accurate as that colour was only used on Series 2 Marinas and this is a Series 1 car.

Perhaps the ugliest Allegro variant, the hearse-like estate in its final form with big plastic bumpers. Colour is Applejack, a bright green that was available on the Allegro 3.
Please forgive me for not posting sooner. I have been crazy busy with my three dogs and four puppies and with my daughter's 10th birthday party. I have my hands in too many things and am experiencing what it is like to be overloaded.
Anyway.......Bella is at my house again....but there is a long story leading up to why. So, if you're interested, here goes.....
....So, if you've been following the story, the family that adopted Bella wanted to return her after only three days because she was being too rough with their dogs.
When I spoke with them on the phone after the wife explained what was going on, I told her that for all the "stink" she and her husband caused in order for them to obtain Bella, I was disappointed that they were not more committed to making it work with her. When I got off the phone, CMAC was sending a van to come pick Bella up. My last post was right after I spoke on the phone with the wife and I was FURIOUS.
The next morning on 10/11 I called my manager to let her know what happened and she said that Bella had never been brought in to CMAC. As I spoke with her, I picked up my cell phone and saw I had a voicemail. When I checked it, It was from the husband of the couple who had adopted Bella. He said they had decided to try to make it work with Bella and their three dogs. He was a little concerned that he and his wife were going on a cruise in a few days and wasn't sure whether he should keep all four dogs together in a boarding kennel. I offered to keep Bella with me while they were away. He gratefully accepted and brought her to me on Friday. She will be here with me until next Saturday or Sunday. She was very happy to see Brinna and her old stomping ground. So.......yes......I have been on a roller coaster ride regarding this sweet puppy.
I'm sure there is a better home out there for Bella, but for now, the couple that has her is is going to try and make it work. I told the husband that they should make a final decision in a few weeks before Bella looses her puppiness and becomes perhaps less desirable to adopt. For now, Bella is here with my family and her buddy Brinna and is enjoying life
This foster business sure does pull on the heartstrings
Brinna was adopted this evening by a family. The Mom contacted me this morning about Brinna and met me this evening at an adoption event in Charlotte. The couple has two children, ages 5 and 11. The Mom and son were present at the adoption. This family doesn't have any other dogs but they do have a young cat. They were so excited to bring Brinna home. The Mom talked about taking her on a long walk and then snuggling with her on the couch tonight. The Mom seemed very sweet. It is so hard to know who the best adopter is sometimes. I felt warmth and genuine caring from the Mom but I am a little concerned about their financial status because money is tight. I just pray that my sweet, smart, little Brinna will have a happy, healthy life. I will check in with the family in a few days to see how things are going. I confess I cried on the car ride home from the event. It is hard to care for and fall in love with a precious puppy and then not feel sad when they are adopted. I will miss her but I remind myself that I saved her life so she could grow up with her forever family. So, say a prayer (or send some positive energy) for a wonderful life for Brinna.

A model of a car featured in a HubNut video and formerly owned by my friend Zel, who swapped it for a Jaguar XJS a few years ago.
I got a call from my "boss" at Charlotte/Mecklenburg Animal Control. They had 7 puppies with kennel cough and no place to keep them. all the sick kennels were full and the puppies could not go in with the healthy dogs and spread the illness. Fosters had stepped up for 5 of the puppies but there were two left. If a foster family couldn't be found, the puppies would be put down. Well, of course I could not let that happen!
Friday morning I went in to the shelter and picked up my new charges. They both have kennel cough and will be with me from 2 - 3 weeks until they are healthy. I give them their medicine twice a day with their food. My 3 boys are vaccinated for Bordatella but so far I am keeping the foster girls separate from my boys.
ABOUT BELLA:
This pretty girl is about 16 weeks old. She has had a difficult start and is very timid. In the 24 plus hours we've had her she is already becomming more confident and playful. It is a joy to see. She loves to play with Brinna and is learning to be a puppy by following her example. She was afraid to come out of her crate at first and was difficult to coax out. She is still tentative, but comes out with encouragement (or food or a chance to play with Brinna). This puppy has some small scares on her face. When I picked her up, she was covered in flea excrement and had very dirty and possibly infected ears. Her eyes are a bit weepy as well. She had a warm bath today and a good ear cleaning. She is noticably underweight. I am hopeful that being here for a few weeks with Brinna and my family will help her build confidence and begin to enjoy her puppyhood. She is a gentle, sweet girl.
P.S. - These pups are keeping me VERY busy so I am getting a bit behind on my comments. Bare with me!
