Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths . An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female 'digests' the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Shot was taken with a 100mm macro lens. NSW, Australia

Macro Mondays: New
Happy New Year to all Macro Mondays moderators and members!
This cute little ceramic ballerina is a gift that I actually bought myself for Christmas. To me it symbolizes a renewal, and the hope that I can start dancing again soon.
The ballerina is not quite 8 cm from the top of her bun to the bottom of her tutu, which I cropped a little to make the picture fit the size requirements.

P1690123 - Loten's Sunbird - Size - 13 cm
# 009
The Loten's sunbird, long-billed sunbird or maroon-breasted sunbird, (Cinnyris lotenius) is a sunbird endemic to peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Its long bill distinguishes it from the similar purple sunbird that is found in the same areas and also tends to hover at flowers. Like other sunbirds, it feeds on small insects and builds characteristic hanging nests.
The species is named after a colonial Dutch governor of Ceylon, Joan Gideon Loten.

BIT OF A SAD DAY ON TWO ACCOUNTS!
Its my birthday and its got a "o" on the end.
My enthusiasm has waned for local birds, they seem so drab, but hey! the photography is far more challenging in the poor light and bad weather, so now thinking positive, lets hit the trail while I still can, and with CAMERA and ZIMMER frame lets be up and away!!!!
Thank you for your visit and comments it means a lot to such a old man!...lol.....Keep safe..Tomx

The Common Iora are brightly coloured small passerine birds, measuring 12 to 13 cm in length and weighing 12 to 17 gms that is widely distributed in Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and South China.
These Common Iora species are sexually dimorphic, the males being slightly larger and having bright breeding plumage. There is large variation in the plumage, with the populations showing variations, some of which are designated as subspecies. The subspecies A. t. multicolor is distributed in Southern India (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala) and Sri Lanka.
The male Common Iora has black wing and black tail. The breeding male had a black cap and black back. The females have greenish wings and olive tail. The underparts are yellow in both male and female. There are two white bars on the wings. The bill is pointed and notched with a straight culmen. The irises are blackish in males and pale yellow in females. The feet are greyish.
Common Ioras forage in trees in small groups, gleaning among the branches for insects. They sometimes join mixed species feeding flocks. The call is a mixture of churrs, chattering and whistles, and the song is a trilled wheeeee-tee. They may sometimes imitate the calls of other birds such as Drongos.
During the breeding season, mainly after the monsoons, the male Common Iora performs an acrobatic courtship display, darting up into the air fluffing up all his feathers, especially those on the pale green rump, then spiralling down to the original perch. Once he lands, he spreads his tail and droops his wings. These species are monogamous. The breeding pair build a compact, shallow cup-shaped nest on a fork of a tree. The nest is a shallow saucer of interwoven grass, cobwebs and fibers.
