A nice surprise on this annual town meeting. There are many guests you see every year, but this one was new. And a classic that has not yet received the recognition it deserves. Good to see one in good condition.

DB1263. One of eight built in 1936, this is London Transport Leyland Cub semi-decker C111, CLX 548.

They were built specifically for the Inter-Station night service which connected London’s major railway termini. In those days railway travellers travelled with large amounts of luggage and the unusual design of these buses provided a large luggage area at the back with additional seating above it.

They had 4.7 litre petrol engines as these were quieter and better suited to night time use in London’s sleeping streets. The bodies were built by Park Royal and they carried a distinctive blue and cream livery.

The Second World War put paid to leisure travel and the Inter-Station service was withdrawn during hostilities. It was reinstated after the war and the semi-decker Cubs resumed their duties until November, 1950 when ordinary red RT double-deckers took over.

C111, CLX 548, was one of the more unusual visitors to the London Bus Museum’s 2023 Spring Gathering at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Surrey.

NB: Never having seen one of these before, and knowing nothing about them, the above information was obtained from the splendid ‘Ian’s Bus Stop’ website which is highly recommended for information about London buses from all eras.
