Barnabas war gebürtiger Zyprier und kam 45 n.Chr. mit dem Apostel Paulus nach Zypern und unterstützte ihn in der Verkündigung des Christentums. In der Nähe von Salamis wurde Barnabas getötet, und ein Gefährte begrub ihn. Erst 488 n.Chr. wurde sein Grab wiederentdeckt und der zypriotische Erzbischof Anthemios gab ihm diese Ruhestätte, die von Arabern zerstört und im 10. Jh. neu errichtet wurde.

Außerhalb des Klosters, etwa 200 m entfernt, hat man in den 1950iger Jahren über dem Grab vom Hl. Barnabas eine Kapelle gebaut. Dort kann man hinunter steigen zum Sarkophag des Heiligen
