El 26 de noviembre de 2008 abrió sus puertas como museo público y universitario de arte contemporáneo. Desde entonces, forma parte activa del proyecto del Centro Cultural de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Se considera un centro de construcción del conocimiento y encuentro, donde se da una conversación sobre la sociedad, la academia y la historia del arte.
