The castle in Niedzica, located about 40 km east of Zakopane. It is a medieval stronghold from 14th century, situated in a very beautiful place - directly on the Czorsztyn Lake. In addition to the castle itself, the area also offers another attraction, namely the dam of the Czorsztyn Reservoir.

Château de Martainville is a Renaissance castle, built by the ship-owner and merchant Jacques Le Pelletier 1485-95, after he had bought the fief Martainville. The castle remained in the family until the last of the line (by then knighted and bearing the name Martainville) died without heir in 1781. The castle then stood abandoned for quite some time, and not put up for sale until 1905 when a cattle dealer bought the whole place, and an adjoining farm - and he sold the castle the French state.
In 1955 work was begun to restore the castle to its former glory - a work they did really well. Today it is a museum for the traditions and arts of Normandy (and really worth a visit!).

Kasteel Duivenvoorde (Castle Duivenvoorde) is in the town of Voorschoten, Zuid-Holland in the Netherlands. It was first mentioned in 1226, making it one of the older castles in Zuid-Holland
The castle is remarkable in that it was never sold; it was inherited by several different noble houses, sometimes through the matrilineal line, something that can be said of very few Dutch castles. For the first five centuries of its history, the castle was owned by one and the same family, namely the Van Duivenvoordes, who gave their name - at that time, van Duvenvoirde - to the castle. Though the castle was named thus, the van Duvenvoirdes properly formed part of the House of Wassenaer, an ancient noble family that has played an important role in Dutch history. Toward the end of the 17th century an owner of Kasteel Duivenvoorde, Johan, retook the name of van Wassenaar, upon which the House of Duivenvoorde became merely another name in the castle’s history.
This is a fantastic castle for photographers. I hope you like the shot I made here.

It is located on the top of Mount Erice, in an absolutely privileged position.
In ancient times, Erice was known for its temple, the sacred thémenos, where the Phoenicians adored Astarte, the Greeks Aphrodite and the Romans Venus.
Mount Eryx served as a reference point for navigators of whom Venus soon became the protector.
At night, a large fire lit in the sacred area served as a lighthouse. The fame of Venus Ericina became such that a temple was also dedicated to her in Rome and her cult spread throughout the Mediterranean.
What remains today of the ancient fortress was the work of the Normans who seem to have reused, for its construction, the material coming from the reconstruction of the pagan temple.
In ancient times, the castle was enclosed by towers, advanced fortification works connected to each other by two crenellated curtains and above all by a drawbridge.

The hunting lodge was built in 1542 and rebuilt under Augustus the Strong in 1723.
The castle has 4 towers and is surrounded by extensive parkland.
Inside you can see an impressive collection of hunting trophies. The oldest exhibits are up to 400 years old.

One of the most beautiful parts of a recent trip was the Cochem Castle, in Cochem, Germany. It is seen here, shrouded in mist, from a tiny graveyard in the town. “The original Cochem Castle, perched prominently on a hill 300 feet above the Moselle River, served to collect tolls from passing ships. Modern research dates its origins to around 1100.
Before its destruction by the French in 1689 (a fate shared by many other castles and towns in the Palatinate), the castle had a long and fascinating history. It changed hands numerous times and, like most castles, also changed its form over the centuries. It was even in hock twice to pay off royal debts! The present castle was rebuilt later in the 19th century. it has been owned by the town of Cochem since 1978.”
Chillon Castle is a medieval fortified castle, erected on a rock spur cut into the waters of Lake Geneva.
The castle's present appearance is the result of many reconstructions during its centuries of existence. Serious work around the present courtyards was carried out in the 11th and 13th centuries.
After the rebuild, it gained importance because it was used to control trade routes to Italy through the St. Bernard Pass. The naturally shaped moat was expanded in the 13th century. The current wooden bridge was built in the eighteenth century and replaced the previous drawbridge.
The present underground of the castle served as a prison in the 14th century, where the Swiss priest and patriot were imprisoned for 4 years, the prior of monastery Saint Victor in Geneva, François Bonivard.
In July 1816, visited this castle Byron , and the fruit of this trip was the romantic poem "Prisoner of Chillon".

Bernarda. Naturalnie ukształtowana fosa została poszerzona w XIII wieku. Obecny drewniany most został zbudowany w XVIII wieku i zastąpił wcześniejszy zwodzony.
In the 10th century there was a moated castle on the site of the present castle, which was part of a reinforcement belt on the Scheldt. The cellar from the 15th century and the tower from the 16th century are the oldest remains. Wissekerke castle was one of the first neo-gothic castles in our country to integrate the former Empire elements. The castle has been redecorated and is primarily intended to reflect a time image of the early 19th century glory period of the Vilain XIIII family. In 1981 the castle, the impressive gatehouse, the old pigeon tower and the elegant suspension bridge over the park pond were protected as a monument. Castle Point Lighthouse is a truly majestic lighthouse standing on a rocky cliff which was formed 2 million years ago. It’s the tallest lighthouse in North Island. It’s a charming place, which every photographer will love. It takes less than 15 minutes to walk to the top viewpoint. You can still see some fossil shells in the rock if you walk to the end of the boardwalk.

Castillo Sohail
Sohail Castle
Sohail castle is located in he heart of Fuengirola river mouth, on a small isolated hill that rises 38 meters above sea level. This circumstance makes it a privileged viewpoint of a wide coastal strip surrounded by the Sierra de Mijas and included in the present day town of Fuengirola.
The magnificent geographical conditions of this place have allowed, since ancient times , the continueous settling of Punic and Roman population. On the ruins of their settlements in the Caliphate period a first tower was built, perhaps a watchtower.
Later, in the twelfth centry, the Almovarids built a defensive enclosure against the Christian army, that was in full offensive against the Moorish kingdom of Granada.
From that moment the military fortress underwent an inevitable process of readjustment of its architecture that would gradually give way to its present appearance: replacing the turning entrance by a direct one, demolishing one of the east towers to built up a platform for the placement of guns, or rearranging the southwest corner of the wall to turn it into an archer's wall after its blasting by the Napoleonic army during the war of independence.
A few years later the castle lost its military function and was sold at public auction. The transition to civil use took it a period of abandonment that would not be interrupted onto the second half of the last century.
The works carried out in recent years by the school workshop have enabled the Sohail Castle to be recovered as a historical meeting point for the people of Fuengirola and as a space where different cultural events are currently held.
Clun Castle sits high on a natural rocky mound in a loop of the river Clun, on the edge of the small, picturesque town of the same name. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest to demonstrate the authority of the English monarchy over this part of the border region, the castle and the nearby settlement prospered in the 13th century thanks to the management of the Fitzalan family, but suffered a number of attacks from across the Welsh border. It was used as a hunting lodge in the 14th century, but was increasingly neglected, and by 1539 the castle was reported as ruinous.

The castle, called the Borgwal, was built between 1350 and 1375.
The castle was then in a sparsely populated area. Here and there there was only one farm, there was no question of village construction. In 1623 Johan van Reede bought the castle. After that he started working on the foundation of the current village of Renswoude.
Burt Castle is one of the most recognizable castles in Donegal. It is located on a small hill overlooking Lough Swilly which would have originally been a small island surrounded by tidal marshland. It was built around 1560 and was one in a network of castles around Inishowen owned by the O’Dohertys. The structure had three stories, two circular watchtowers, a small vaulted chamber, and openings for muskets. During the 1500s many powerful Irish clans started losing their lands to the English Crown and so eventually had to ‘bend the knee’ before King Henry VIII just to hold onto what they had. This process was called ‘surrender and re-grant’. This brought the Irish chieftains into the English legal system with the downside that the King could (and did!) take back the land and grant it to however he chose. The castle thereafter fell in and out of the O’Doherty’s ownership, it was recorded that brothers Richard and Henry Hovenden resided here in 1587 under English instruction to resist the Spanish Armada, it was later occupied by Sir Henry Dowcra and then by Sir Cahir O’Doherty who went on to carry out his famous rebellion by sacking Derry, Strabane, and Lifford. It eventually fell into the hands of Sir Arthur Chichester who quelled the rebellion and was granted O’Doherty’s 170,000 acres of land after he was hung, drawn, and quartered! A medallion dated to 1525 and a coin to 1547 were found near the castle.
Duingt Castle an autumn morning, Lake Annecy, Haute-Savoie, France
The history of the place starts in the Bronze Age (from 1400 to 700 BC) where the first habitats for human settlements were evolved. It was in this epoch where the hallmark of Duingt, the island called the island of Roselet, has been evolved from the lake.
The "Château de Duingt" (other names: Château de Châteauvieux or C. de Ruphy) is located on a small island connected by a causeway to the mainland. The original castle was built in the 11th century and got its present shape between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Compiled by C.H.C.A. van Sypesteyn (1857 - 1937), a valuable art collection forms the foundation of the Castle-Museum Sypesteyn in Loosdrecht. In addition to the collection of portraits, furniture, silver and glass objects, clocks and sculptures, there is also a beautiful collection of porcelain. The Loosdrecht porcelain is particularly worth seeing.
The castle gardens
A garden with hedges, moats and decorative wrought-iron gates characterize Sypesteyn Castle. Via paths and bridges, you can walk around the maze and cross the canal and take a leisurely stroll through the orchards, the park and the castle garden. You will discover all sorts of indigenous and exotic trees during your stroll.
Tribute to Van Sypesteyn
The lord of the castle did not build it merely as a place to house his art collection. As the last descendant of the Van Sypesteyn line, he wanted to build the castle to pay tribute to his family. The stunning garden and park were built in the 17th-century style. Surrounded by the Loosdrecht lakes and the Vecht River, the area around the castle is also magnificent.

Himeji Castle (姫路城, Himeji-jō) is a hilltop Japanese castle complex situated in the city of Himeji which is located in the Hyōgo Prefecture of Japan. The castle is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, comprising a network of 83 rooms with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period The castle is frequently known as Hakuro-jō or Shirasagi-jō ("White Egret Castle" or "White Heron Castle") because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a bird taking flight.
Himeji Castle dates to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on top of Himeyama hill. The fort was dismantled and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle in 1346, and then remodeled into Himeji Castle two centuries later. Himeji Castle was then significantly remodeled in 1581 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who added a three-story castle keep. In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the castle to Ikeda Terumasa for his help in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Ikeda completely rebuilt the castle from 1601 to 1609, expanding it into a large castle complex. Several buildings were later added to the castle complex by Honda Tadamasa from 1617 to 1618.For almost 700 years, Himeji Castle has remained intact, even throughout the bombing of Himeji in World War II, and natural disasters including the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake.
Himeji Castle is the largest and most visited castle in Japan, and it was registered in 1993 as one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country. (Wikipedia)
Matsumoto Castle (松本城, Matsumoto-jō) is one of Japan's premier historic castles, along with Himeji Castle and Kumamoto Castle.[1] The building is also known as the "Crow Castle" (烏城, Karasu-jō) due to its black exterior. It was the seat of the Matsumoto domain. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture and is within easy reach of Tokyo by road or rail.
The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late sixteenth century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.[1]
Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain.[1] Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats, and gatehouses.(Wikipedia)
Boxtel is a small town, but its big church shows that it was an important place once. Just outside the town you'll find a park in which lies this castle, Kasteel Stapelen. The entire complex was given a new look in early neo-Gothic style in 1857-1858, to fit the then popular ideas about what a medieval castle should look like. Towers were heightened, the facade of the chapel was renewed and countless battlements were added to places where there never had been any. Since 1915 the castle has been used as a monastery. In the Middle Ages a miracle occured here which is still celebrated each year with a big procession.

Nothing is known of landscape gardening in the16th century. The present garden is open to the public and integrates French, German and English styles of the 20th century. Bouvigne castle is a charming building outside Breda, in the Mastbos forest. Its present look dates mainly from the 17th century. For a long time, the princes of Orange used it as their summer house. The castle, that stands in the water, was built in a typical renaissance style. Its beautiful gardens are open to the public.
