Littlebury, Essex
The English arrived in Britain in the 4th-7th Centuries, and part of the island was further colonised in the 8th and 9th Centuries by arrivals from Scandinavia. As a result, the placenames of the country that became England are generally derived from Anglo-Saxon or Viking languages.
But the river names are older. It is easy to imagine how the Anglo-Saxons built and named their settlements, but learned the names of natural features from the few remaining indigenous Celts. The Celts are gone now from East Anglia, but their names for their rivers remain.
The name 'Cam' is cognate with the Welsh word 'cwm', meaning 'valley'. The River Cam spends most of its life in the flat Cambridgeshire fenland, but it rises in the hills and valleys of what is now north Essex. It is easy to see why it might have been named the Cam by the pre-English inhabitants of the area, the river which comes from the valleys. And so it is today.
