Tantallon Castle is a semi-ruined mid-14th-century fortress, located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of North Berwick, in East Lothian, Scotland. It sits atop a promontory opposite the Bass Rock, looking out onto the Firth of Forth. The last medieval curtain wall castle to be constructed in Scotland, Tantallon comprises a single wall blocking off the headland, with the other three sides naturally protected by sea cliffs.
Tantallon was built in the mid 14th century by William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas.

The original mill De Zwaluw was built in 1875 as a corn and pearl barley mill. Additionally , it was used as a saw mill.
The mill was listed as a Rijksmonument in 1971. In November 1972, the mill was struck by lightning and burnt down, leaving the base and saw mill standing. Restoration started in 1984 and completed in 1987.

Kinderdijk is a village in the Netherlands, belonging to the municipality of Molenwaard, in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. Kinderdijk is situated in a polder in the Alblasserwaard. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

This might look like a piece of art, but it isn't. In fact it is the pier for the ferry from Vlieland to Texel, both Waddenislands.
The small ferry only runs from the end of april till the end of september.
In the wintertime the pier is apparently partly dismantled.
To be honest, I don't know if the tide is extra low now, but the pier looks like it stands in the middle of the sand plain !
Probably made from driftwood.

Ruins of Kilchurn Castle on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was first constructed in the mid-15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy, who extended both the castle and their territory in the area over the next 150 years. After the Campbells became Earls of Breadalbane and moved to Taymouth Castle, Kilchurn fell out of use and was in ruins by 1770.

Begun in 1030 under Conrad II, with the east end and high vault of 1090-1103, the imposing triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone is the "culmination of a design which was extremely influential in the subsequent development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries". As the burial site for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings the cathedral is regarded as a symbol of imperial power. With the Abbey of Cluny in ruins, it remains the largest Romanesque church. It is considered to be "a turning point in European architecture", one of the most important architectural monuments of its time and one of the finest Romanesque monuments.
In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as "a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire".

Pรผhtitsa Convent (Estonian: Kuremรคe Jumalaema Uinumise nunnaklooster, Russian: ะัั ัะธัะบะธะน ะฃัะฟะตะฝัะบะธะน ะถะตะฝัะบะธะน ะผะพะฝะฐััััั) is a Russian Orthodox convent in Eastern Estonia. The convent is located on a site known as Pรผhitsetud ("blessed" in Estonian) since ancient times. The present convent was founded in 1891.
Nearby is a holy spring that is known for its curative powers.
Some women told me I had to take a bath at the holy well. I said I had no towel to dry me, but they convinced me and said it was better and that you shouldn't dry with a towel.
Waaaahhh, I took a bath, but it was very cold !

Eurasian blue tits, usually resident and non-migratory birds, are widespread and a common resident breeder throughout temperate and subarctic Europe and the western Palearctic in deciduous or mixed woodlands with a high proportion of oak. They usually nest in tree holes, although they easily adapt to nest boxes where necessary. Their main rival for nests and in the search for food is the larger and more common great tit.
The Eurasian blue tit prefers insects and spiders for its diet. Outside the breeding season, they also eat seeds and other vegetable-based foods. The birds are famed for their skill, as they can cling to the outermost branches and hang upside down when looking for food.

Interior from Garmo stave church at Maihaugen in Lillehammer, Norway. The baptismal font is made from soapstone and dates to the 12th century.
This stave church originally dates to the middle of the 12th century - later expanded in the 18th century. In the 19th century the church was replaced with a newly built on in Garmo and this one was dismantled and sold at auction(!) in 1880. It was bought by Trond Eklestuen, who spent much time buying traditional Norwegian objects (and buildings) and giving them away to museums for preservation. The church ended up at Maihaugen (the largest open-air museum in northern Europe, founded in 1904), a place dedicated to the preservation of Norwegian history and architecture. The church was rebuilt there in 1921.

The Monastery of Saint Naum (Macedonian: ะะฐะฝะฐััะธั ะกะฒะตัะธ ะะฐัะผ) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Republic of Macedonia, named after the medieval Saint Naum from Ohrid, who founded it. in 905. It is situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 kilometres (18 mi) south of the city of Ohrid.
Sveti Naum is also buried here and you can hear his heartbeat, when you put your ear on the grave. (so they say)

The mosque was built in 1757 and is located in the Old Bazaar neighbourhood. It is one of fifteen mosques originally built in the city during the Ottoman era.
The mosque was given a "Cultural Monument" (Monumente Kulturore) status by the Albanian government in 1973, sparing its destruction by the totalitarian communist regime of Albania. The remaining twelve mosques were subsequently demolished. Because of a religion ban in Albania, the mosque was used as a training hall for circus acrobats who made use of the high domed ceilings to hang their trapezes.

Krujรซ. In the background the fortress. Kruje has Ottoman style influences seen in the alley with the old bazaar. Krujas old bazaar is well preserved, and is a very photogenic place, attracting quite some tourists. Nowadays it houses mainly souvenir shops with traditional Albanian costumes, musical instruments, old books and memorabilia from the Communist days.

The Catha plant (Khat or qat (Catha edulis, Arabic: ุงููุงุชโ ) is a flowering shrub reaching full size in seven or eight years. Its crop โ the new shoots and leaves โ can be harvested four times a year, making it financially attractive for the farmer. It is easy to grow but requires ample irrigation to produce fresh and moist, young green leaves. It is native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria. Especially the young leaves and stems are chewed, not eaten. Among communities from the areas where the plant is native, qat chewing has a history as a social custom dating back thousands of years.
Especially in Yemen and Somalia qat is widely consumed and often considered as a burden for the economies of those countries.

Every 2 years the Grand-Place (Grote markt, central square) in Brussels is covered with a flower carpet of begonias (this year 80% Dahlias) during 3 or 4 days.
The carpet of 70 m x 24 m is composed by about 120 volunteers, with nearly 1 million flowers in less than 4 hours.
This year, 2024, the event was from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 August at the Grand-Place in Brussels.
