After a ride on Colorado's Million Dollar Highway (Colorado 550) and snapping pictures on Silverton's Greene Street, it was time for a break. Since it was too early for a local craft beer, we opted to stop at a local ice cream parlor. Smedley's fit the bill perfectly.
Located at 1314 Greene Street, different websites state that the establishment "serves 16 different flavors of Dreyers ice cream, Steaming Bean espresso, cappuccino, lattes & iced coffees, plus an excellent selection of iced teas."
While enjoying my two scoops, I noticed the Smedley's sign. It captured our laid-back mood and time of day as we transitioned to the afternoon.
In spite of its condition, Floyd's owners were strangely reluctant to have a new sign made. When John Espinola of Art Works finally convinced them to take the plunge, they were delighted with the result. This roof-mounted sign is of 3/4” MDO plywood coated on all sides and edges with oil enamel. All the lettering is hand-painted. The poles are dimensional, made of PVC piping and reflective vinyl with painted wood caps & bases. www.artwks.com

When I first saw this building sign, I couldn't see the "5" and the "2" at the same time. A bit of op art design to confuse the brain. What's great about this sign is that at night, illumination behind the sign displays a white "52" on a gray circle. Superb work.
