Hi All,
I managed to creep closer to Mr. Pileated than my last post of him. I clicked away as he pecked fast and furiously, (more like head banging)! :0(

Back to business. Returning sometimes feels like jumping on a moving train. New Orleans, btw, was awesome. I think Allison and I found our Vegas.
Terrific Tuesday to you.

Canadian Pacific's southbound business train 40B-20 zips through Ainsworth, IA on its way to Kansas City.
The train has regained former MILW trackage, leaving the Rock Island's Golden State mainline at the tree line behind the train. The former RI bridge over the creek is still standing, although abandoned and covered in trees.

A Great Blue Heron takes off with an armored catfish across Horsepen Bayou in morning fog. The invasive tropical fish, in a catatonic state from the recent freeze, was easy pickings but potentially deadly to the bird with its barbed fins. Possibly alert to the danger, the bird did not attempt to swallow the fish but rather manipulated it over and over with its beak before flying out of sight. When I encountered what I believe was the same bird some time later, it was neither dead nor still in possession of the intact fish. Eaten? Abandoned? A bayou mystery.

With not much to do these days Wooly Monkey has gotten himself into a little monkey business.
Stay home. Stay safe. Stay out of any monkey business.
Since posting this I have received a few comments suggesting how folks needed a good laugh during these difficult times. I'm grateful for your laughs and comments.

Roughly a day after BNSF's Front Range Sub was reopened to traffic, the Buck local is returning north to Longmont after working industries off the branch to Lafayette. At restricted speed, they trundle through the site of the wrecked units off of B-PTLLAC4 and the newly constructed bridge. At the moment, it is believed that a string of storage baretables in the siding here somehow rolled onto the main, where the B-PTLLAC4 struck them and hit the ground.
Monkey business
The title is just ofcourse for fun, humans are no monkey's , are they?
And here's the real story. If you want to see the work of Frans Lanting, the dutch master in nature and animal photography , in the Nederlands fotomuseum in Rotterdam , you'll really have to hurry. One of the most entertaining things about self-driving safaris is that once you're parked and quiet, the animals ignore you and just go about their business. This lion (and the others) walked so close to our vehicle a couple times that we rolled up the windows (just in case).

Back in business
2021 was the year of the great garden renovation. Instead of photographing foxes, badgers, sun rays and frosty mornings I was now building my own Japanese garden paradise with a large pond, a rocky garden stream, stepping stones throughout the garden, a fancy shed and a large wooden deck. Great fun to learn how to build it yourself of course, but that also meant very little time for photography in 2021. Luckily all that is finished now and we can soon enjoy the warmer seasons again in a garden full of wings, fins, fluffy tails, and flowers.
As a kick-off to this new year of photography, I visited the cold northern parts of Finland and Norway, together with 5 highly talented nature photographers. While temperatures back home reached +20°C, we were experiencing snow blizzards, cold sessions in drafty hides and getting pooped on by thousands of birds. Definitely one of the better photography trips I’ve been on though, all thanks to Stefan Gerrits Photography for putting together the perfect trip to the Varanger Peninsula!
Anyhow, this is the first of many images I will share from this trip. The European Shags (the bird, not that other thing….) at the island of Hornøya were closely sitting together, forming this dark patch of feathers with here and there some bright yellow cheeks and a pair of vivid green eyes staring back at you.
There was plenty of sad faces last week to see the last runs' of the long lasting C40-8 fleet that graced the rails of the former DM&IR for many years. Thankfully, it was business as usual for the captive fleet of six axle DMIR, IC and BLE EMD's. We were up early on Wednesday morning to be in place at sunrise for a southbound U713 with 3 LaGrange veterans. DMIR 408 plus 2 hits the morning sun as the taconite steams in the cold morning air about to duck under Rte 33 in Grand Lake, MN.
