El lugar sobre el que actualmente se asienta el castillo fue ocupado primero por los vikingos, hacia el año 970, quienes instalaron allí un campo destinado al comercio con los irlandeses de la zona. En el año 1270, se construyó la primera fortaleza, con madera, en forma de una mota feudal, como era habitual entre los normandos, para asegurar el control del territorio. El actual fue construido en 1425. Está situado en el condado de Clare, en la República de Irlanda. Con su estilo de edificación normanda, se encuentra en el centro del pueblo de Bunratty, entre las ciudades de Limerick y Ennis. Bunratty , en irlandés) significa “el fondo o el extremo del río (Ratty)”. El río que bordea el castillo desemboca, no lejos de allí, en el Océano Atlántico.
Si el tema de la Pangea se da como cierto ...entre finales del Triásico y comienzos del Jurásico (hace aproximadamente 200 millones de años) producto de los cambios y movimientos de las placas tectónicas, se justifica el clima nuboso igual que en Galicia.

Rising above the banks of the River Ratty in County Clare, Bunratty Castle is one of Ireland’s finest and best-preserved medieval tower houses. The present fortress was completed around 1425 by the powerful MacNamara family, replacing earlier Viking and Norman fortifications that once occupied this strategic crossing point.
During the sixteenth century the castle passed into the hands of the O’Brien dynasty, Earls of Thomond, before gradually falling into decline. By the mid-twentieth century it had become a ruin, but in the 1950s 7th Viscount Gort undertook an ambitious restoration, furnishing the castle with an outstanding collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century furniture, tapestries and works of art. Today it stands as one of Ireland’s most complete medieval castles, overlooking the adjoining Bunratty Folk Park.
Bunratty Castle (Irish: Caisleán Bhun Raithe, meaning "Castle at the Mouth of the Ratty") is a large 15th century tower house in County Clare, Ireland. It is located in the centre of Bunratty village (Irish: Bun Ráite), by the N18 road between Limerick and Ennis, near Shannon Town and its airport. The castle and the adjoining folk park are run by Shannon Heritage as tourist attractions.
