BUGASERA DISTRICT, Rwanda - Rwandan preschoolers wait for their siblings to finish their first day of the 2009 school year outside the Kamabuye Secondary School Jan. 12, 2009. More than 580 students in four grade levels and aged between 13 and 18 years old study at the school.
The Kamabuye Secondary School was built in 2005 as part of a U.S. Department of Defense Humanitarian Assistance program. Over the last ten years, 12 schools and one hospital were built in Rwanda under this program. Currently this program is funding the expansion of a college in Matare, a middle school in Masaka and the construction of a hospital in Kigali.

GAKO, Rwanda - Three Rwandan soldiers return to their tents during a break in peacekeeping training Jan. 12 200 at the Rwandan Military Academy here. Many of the facilities here were built with funds from the African Contingency Operations Training Assistance Program. Most recently, the program funded the purchase of 40 new tents, including the one pictured here, or enough to house all peacekeeping trainees at the school.
ACOTA is a joint State Department and Department of Defense program. About 12,000 Rwandan soldiers have been trained under the ACOTA program including the 3454 Rwandan peacekeepers currently deployed to Sudan.

#BUGESERA #ReceptionCenter (#BugeseraDistrict): Immediately after the first Burundian refugees began arriving in Rwanda in early April 2015, UNHCR and #MIDIMAR established #BugeseraReception center in order to initially receive, register and provide temporary assistance to those fleeing. In addition to being registered as refugees, UNHCR mobilized its #partners to provide essential items, conduct health and malnutrition screening, and to vaccinate children against measles and polio, before they are relocated by UNHCR to Mahama camp.

Makeshift traction out of cloth and a bag of rocks to keep leg at length. Man needed simple pinning of proximal femoral end, but would not get it. No capacity for that type of surgery. Will be in bed for a number of months until it heals enough so that he can walk with limp. Among other things developing pneumonia is a real worry with so little movement.

Not entirely sure what happened here (my Kinyarwanda/French don't really exist yet). Sounded like he had a large abscess removed from over shoulder blade, but infection moved down through arm. Not visible in this photo, but most muscle in bicep and forearm had atrophied, hand was severely swollen.
