Vancouver Island 2017

... for a Happy Sunday !

Humpback whale / Buckelwal (Megaptera novaeangliae)

seen at sunset between Bella Bella and Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

This big humpback whale suddenly surfaced and blew just a few meters next to our boat near Telegraf Cove on Vancouver Island. Almost too close to take a sharp photo with my camera's telephoto lens. It was breathtaking and the highlight of a stunning day at sea that started with heavy fog and ended in a warm sunset under a steel blue sky after watching humpback whales, orcas, porpoises and dolphins in one of the most paradisiacal places I have ever seen ...

Thank you everyone for taking a look at my images, truly appreciated!

Each year thousands of these gentle giants rest, play and nurture their young in the sheltered waters of Hervey Bay. A real treat to watch them.

They have been like this for a while, very close to each other. I thought the mother might be nursing the baby. Then the little one went into play mode.

The whale swimming towards the setting sun made a wonderful closing scene after plenty of whale sightings, just before the boeat headed back to Provincetown. It was an unforgettable experience I would not want to miss.

Deutsch:

The wildlife was not neglected on our trip to Canada. Although animal photography is not necessarily my profession, but if you already visited this country, I did not want to stand behind there. Especially on Vancouver Iceland, I was happy and that I was right there then confirmed. On our tours we had, I think, really lucky. Especially with whales. But also sea eagles, sea lions, orcas and also bears were there.

this playful and curious calf showed a lot of activity . . . get closer each breath cycle . . . swimming with whales is some kind of addictive :)

we saw that juvenile humpack from a far distance breaching multiple times. by the time we got there he breached at least 20 times and gave us at least 2 other full breaches before leaving with a deep dive, Monterey Bay, CA
