Why is it that sometimes we are unwilling to talk about our struggles with those closest to us? A convincing reason we give ourselves is that we don’t want to burden those whom we feel we should rather be supporting. We find what weighs us down painful to the extent that we do not wish it on anyone else, out of a sense of decency, perhaps, but also not a little pride, for if we cannot manage our problems, how could anyone else?
Do we really possess such stoicism, though? Because when we, without giving them a chance, then turn for comfort to strangers, professionals, or friends and family in our outer circles of familiarity, do we not go with a pit of resentment lodged within us, born of the fact that those who we’ve best equipped with all the time and affection we’ve spent on them to care for us have, just when they are most needed, been found lacking? How hard it is to love and invest in other people without developing gross expectations of what we should receive from them in return. They should’ve sensed our suffering, they should’ve reached out first, they should’ve known.
If only we were wiser in how we suffered, knowing how much of its weight we can ask others to bear and how much must necessarily be carried on our own instead of throwing too much of ourselves into arms not made to support us or sinking into self-pity.
