The area around Vidin is the poorest region in the E.U. The GDP is around 45% of the entire European average (London is around 300%).
Unfortunately this happened in a lot of Bulgarian towns, places with mercantile traditions in the 19th and early 20th century were turned into industrial centres by the Communists to ensure 100% employment. In Vidin, most of the sizable Jewish and Muslim population emigrated and, after 1989, the failing factories closed of course and most people moved to Sofia or left Bulgaria. Now most people left are either under 17 or over 60. Even the cinema closed down.
