Serving both as an entrance and indicating the direction of Mecca

We arrived at our hotel late at night and this was our first glimpse of the BLUE MOSQUE!!

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul is the one of a very small number of mosques in the world, outside of the Two Holy Cities to have six minarets. At the time of building, the Sultan (Ahmed I, after whom the mosque is formally named) was reprimanded for his presumption, as it had the same number of minarets as the Ka'aba Mosque in Meccah. To defuse the row, he paid for a seventh minaret in Meccah rather than change the plans for his own monument.
