I wish every great picture were mine - - this was taken last summer at Summit Camp, Greenland by a friend, Brent Folmer. Notice the spikes of light on the sides and the central sun pillar extending from the sun to the horizon. Sometimes sun dogs have multiple rings and rainbows at the spikes. Sundogs [parhelion] are produced only by clouds cold enough to consist entirely of ice crystals. Such clouds are usually only found at temperatures below -20C

[ship offload] The USCGC icebreaker, just pulling into Winter Quarters Bay. This is our last visiting ship of the season. On 14 Feb 06, I was able to tour this boat - - that black "crows nest" is the aloft conn, from where the ship is driven through the ice. The large white box between the stack and the fantail is the helo garage - - they can land a helocopter on the fantail and then pull it inside for protection, maintenance, etc. When the helo garage is unoccupied, it's a great space for all kinds of recreation activities.

This is a Kollsman-type barometric aircraft altimeter. By settting the numbers in the little window at 3 o'clock to 29.92 [the mean seal level pressure in inches of mercury] we can tell what the "physioaltitude" is at camp. This morning it registered 11,280 feet equivalent. [The real altitude here is 10,660 feet.]

actually , there aren't much red trees in my country...
but i went to Koayai National Park 2 months ago for camping and i found this will be so nice if i took and share here with all flickr member.
Overlooking the town of Kangerlussuaq (Danish: Søndre Strømfjord) and Greenland's international airport. During WWII this was the American Sondrestrom Air Base . It is located about 67°N 50°W. The last USAF personnel left in 1992. Current population is about 400 - 500. Almost all of the permanent structures were built during the American occupation. The large runway enables 747s to land here.

[ship offload] For a while the icebreaker Krasin and the fuel tanker Lawrence H Gianella were tied up side by side - - the Gianella was offloading 235,000 barrels of fuel and the Krasin came in to get fresh water. Apparently Krasin's reverse osmosis unit is down. There is a gang plank connecting the two ships. Note how low in the water the Gianella is at the start of offload. The beige fuel lines make an "S" on the ice pier to the right.
