The blackbuck, (Antilope cervicapra) also known as the Indian antelope, is an antelope commonly found in India. The blackbuck is the sole extant member of the genus Antilope. This shot was taken in Velavadar, Gujarat. My blog on Velavadar can be seen at jagadipsingh.blogspot.in
The white blackbuck here is either albino or leukistic. Albinism in Blackbucks is rare and caused by the lack of 'Melanin'. The animal looks fully white due to the lack of melanin in their skin. Wildlife experts say that the biggest problem with these Albinos is that they are singled out by predators and hunted. These are Albinos.
Leucism is a condition characterized by reduced pigmentation in animals and humans. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.

The Blackbuck is an antilope species that lives on open plains and in open woodlands in Northwest and in a few areas in Central India.
Adult males are dark brown to velvet black and females are tawny colored, all with white below.
Blackbuck are grazers. They can reach speeds of 80km/h (50mph) and historically their main predator was the cheetah which is now extinct on the Indian subcontinent.
Velavadar NP ( sometimes referred to as Blackbuck NP) is a main stronghold for this species.

It was a terribly cloudy morning and we had little hopes of seeing anything interesting when we spotted 3 of these Grey Wolves.
This is an endangered species of the grasslands which are fast disappearing across the country. It is active at night and best seen early morning or late evenings. The Wolves hunt the animals and birds of the grasslands which include Blackbucks, Hares, sometimes cattle like Goats or sheep.
We weren't expecting this at all, and then they crossed the road right in front of us. There were a pack of 3 that were trying to hunt - and we could sight them all. They were howling and interacting with each other.
The area it frequents is dotted with poultry farms, fields, plots for sale and even some constructions - sadly! The grasslands are not even protected which is quite bad!

The blackbuck is an antelope native to India and Nepal. Male adults are dark brown to black on the back and the outside of the legs, while the rest is white, hence the name of the species. Females and juveniles, on the other hand, are tan and white. The helically coiled horns are only worn by males.
You can see males and females in this herd, but obviously not a single male adult.
A very delicate looking animal that is so beautiful and graceful. They are pretty small for deer and they have these two beautiful horns that separate them from Blackbuck females.
These are native to the country and prefer arid hills, grasslands, deserts, dry scrub and light forests. The animal was quite shy and ran away quickly when we briefly stopped for a shot.

The golden yellow grass lit by the evening golden sun provided a wonderful backdrop to the blackbucks photography - they would go into deeper grass and then remerge. This shot was taken in Velavadar blackbuck sanctuary in Gujarat, about 3 hours drive from Ahmedabad.
Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), Arabian Sand Gazelle (Gazella marica) and Blackbuck Antelope (Antilope cervicapra).
Wildlife Reserve on Sir Bani Yas Island, Al Gharbia Region, UAE.
On a trip to a wonderful grassland, sighted 30-40 of these beautiful Antelopes. Both these are males as noted by its horns and dark plumage. The one in the back is a juvenile and was closely following the larger male.
The shot was taken during sunset, golden light and hence the orange/brownish hues throughout. The primary visit to the place was for the 25+ harriers that roost there during the nights.

A male blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) grazes at the Fossil Rim Wildlife center near Glen Rose, Texas. Once abundant, blackbuck antelope are now very rare in the wild outside of game preserves in India. Hunting for meat and trophies, as well as habitat destruction, has severely reduced the numbers of wild blackbuck.
One of the few antelope which exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, males and females are readily distinguishable. Only males have ridged, spiral horns that can grow to more than 29 inches. All young are born tan, but males gradually darken to deep brown or black with age. Females remain a light tan with white markings and bellies.
Dominant males command a territory of 3-40 acres that includes a harem of females and young.

Blackbucks are a common species of antelopes found in the bird sanctuary that I visited. They numbered in 100's with the ratio of females outweighing males by a big number.
The dominant males have their own female herd to protect and mate with. When a challenger comes along they engage in a behavior known as "Lekking". Something that I read as not very common in animal kingdom.
Both the males locked their horns and pushed each other till one of the males could not take it any longer. The defeated male then bent his head as if to acknowledge the loss and walked away. This behavior - I understand from literature - is to demonstrate to the females the male's prowess.
This happened 2-3 times with few different herds in the ~2500 acre grassland. It was fun to watch, but the full impact and meaning of those actions, I understood only after coming back and reading.

These deer are rare in the region I live in, but not in the birding area we went to which was in another state 3 hours away. The place was teeming with them, but then the animals are quite wary of humans. This one is a male and quite a beautiful creature to watch. The females are brownish in color and much smaller in size without any horns.

These two male Blackbucks were fighting for the coveted female herd. The one on the left was a challenger while the right one was defending its territory - I knew this since I was at the place and not from this picture.
The Right Blackbuck pushed the left one away until the challengers head was turned completely and he was pinned down. The challenger left the field gracefully, but as if to say - "I will be back" !
This competitive behaviour to please the females is known as "Lekking". Something that I read as not very common in animal kingdom.

A common animal in the ever shrinking grasslands of the state. This one is a male and he was overseeing his herd while being watchful of the competition. There were atleast two other males who were eyeing the herd.
The place had a pretty large number of these Blackbucks - maybe 200-300 of them. A pattern we saw is that one male would have a large number of females in its protection along with a couple of other younger males too. When another male wants to lead the females, there is a small fight where each of them lock their horns and push each other. That quick battle decides the winner. I was able to capture some of the action and was happy that the battle was a quick painless affair.

I was thrilled to see these still alive after so many died during the freeze in Texas
Have a wonderful weekend.
View large and you can see the Antelope better.
A common animal in the ever shrinking grasslands of the state. This one is a female and they were basking in the sun for much of the hot day. Since it was a protected area, there is no predator that could hunt them - except of course people. In other areas, they are targeted for their meat. I believe something similar could be happening in the grassland once they cross the imaginary boundaries which the animals don't understand.

This is a beautiful ground bird found in small groups as they forage for insects in dry open countryside. They frequent those areas where the grass is smaller than their height so that it doesn't block their view of the surroundings. I like their colors which is quite interesting.
The grasslands we visited had a good population of them. They were out in the open foraging on the ground freely without any predators around. This is not the season of raptors yet, so guess they are quite comfortable exposing themselves in short grass. Once the winter sets, the area gets several raptor visitors - all of which prey on this bird. The other creatures around were lots of pipits, larks and around 40-50 Blackbucks which were minding their own business.

A large bird of prey that migrates from Europe and Central Asia to India during winters. These harriers roost communally in numbers ranging from 10 to 50 or even more. Montagu's were hard to see late last year, but they are seen reasonably easy this year. We sighted several of these birds along with the males which are more beautiful and majestic.
The birds were roosting in a large grassland and had the common of a large number of Blackbuck antelopes.
It took quite a bit of patience to slow go close in our vehicle and take a shot from the distance. Some of them like the Pallid Male didn't give a chance, but the Montagu's was quite comfortable.

We travelled to a place 250 kms away over the weekend to a grassland area. It was the biggest grassland I had seen so far and the place was amazing. Harriers were plentiful - maybe 30-40 - and this is not the peak time yet for them. There were also several short toed snake eagles, 1 Bonelli's eagle, Short-Eared Owl, a dozen Kestrels, couple of buzzards, Blackbucks and 1000's of uncommon larks and pipits.
The Harriers would slow glide across the undulating terrain and suddenly pounce on something like a lizard or large horned grasshoppers. This shot was taken during one such glide. A short while later, its mate - a male - caught a Garden Lizard for a meal.
This is a migratory bird from Central Asia, Eastern Europe and maybe Western Europe to India during winters. India is known to be one of the largest wintering grounds for Harriers globally. The females of this species look similar to Pallid Harriers and hence confusing to id. The area had a very good number of males and females and as the evening came, the birds were easy to shoot.

This Heron used to spend most of the day around this particular pond at Blackbuck Lodge. I managed to get this photo just after the sun came up.
A juvenile blackbuck leaps to cross the road while an adult male is walking. The bus is actually waiting patiently for them to cross.
.....it's just one thing after another!
In this case, it is a male blackbuck chasing a female. This was taken at the Monarto Safari Park east of Adelaide in South Australia. It is a wonderful open range zoo with many acres for the animals to run wild. The blackbuck originate in India and are pretty swift when they want to be, capale of hitting speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour!
