“Bjango iStat Menus 4”

A nice update from version 3, iStat Menus 4 is a powerful and highly customisable system monitor with nice UI graphics so you can get to all your system data quickly and efficiently.

Pictured:

1/ Sensors. Displays temperature, voltage, current levels, HDD spin rate etc of all your system components. This is how I know that the MacBookAir often runs at temperature above 100˚C when crunching numbers (e.g. video rendering).

2/ Network. Displays current network traffic as well as breaking down who is using how much. Very useful to narrow down which app is using all your network traffic and preventing you to view your streaming video adequately.

3/ CPU. Displays CPU usage load broken down by User / System / Nice / Idle. Also displays load average a la “top”. I am fairly sure that the load average of 1 denotes single core levels — so max for a quad core machine is 4 — but the percentage values denotes 4 as 100% (this is a change from iStat Menus 3 where 100% means 1 core).

4/ Memory. Does not really require much explanation. Inactive is essentially free-able memory. This touches on the specifics of OSX which is too long to explain so I won‘t bother.

5/ Battery. A nice battery breakdown not just about the computer but also all the bluetooth devices which requires charging.

6/ Date/Time. My favorite of the bunch. Highly customisable Date/Time display so I can configure everything in ISO 8601 style complete with time zone information. This makes it easy for me to note the order of events if I decided to screenshot anything. Allows additional cities to be added and configured in the way one wishes.

Verdict: highly recommended for the Mac data nerds. Normal humans can skip if the review above is all jibberish to you.

If it’s 9 PM, Friday 20 June in Melbourne, Australia, what time is it in Trieste, Italy? Or Detroit, USA? bjango.com/apps/cities/

This illustrates the color shift between using the color profile in photoshop and how it appears without the profile when posting online. Finally figured out how to correct this!

Here is the basic instructions I started with. In photoshop:

1) Choose Edit > Color Settings... and set the working space for RGB to Monitor RGB

For every photo then...

2) Open a document and choose Edit > Convert Profile..., then set it to Working RGB

3) Save

4) Edit > Assign Profile..., then set it to Do Not Color Manage This Document

5) Save as file for upload

This procedure works evey time for me. It does not matter what color profile used for editing images.

Beats ($1.99)

Working out the BPM (beats per minute) of a song couldn’t be simpler—just tap along with the song. Unlike some other counters, Beats uses intelligent averaging that hones in on the correct BPM the more you tap.
