No small talk. No negotiations. Give me the fish. - An osprey is giving me a very deliberate, demanding, eye to eye contact stare.

This Baird's Sandpiper put on a close show late this past summer at a riverfront park in Ossining, NY...
I spent an hour taking long exposure shots of Lake Louise. Just as I was about to wrap up, I decided to take a shot of this viewing station. I was standing right in front of it taking my photo when this beautiful Clark's nutcracker decided to rest on it for literally a second. I was quick enough to capture it before it flew away. I'll have to share one or two of the more scenic shots soon, but I chose this one for the photo of the day as it would be quite hard to replicate.
This Giant Kingfisher had a successful hunt, but it may have overestimated its abilities! It swooped in for the catch, but the fish seems a little too big for its beak to handle. Watching this determined bird tackle its oversized meal by the Marakissa River in The Gambia was both impressive and amusing. The photo was taken during a birdwatching trip along the Marakissa River, located in the western part of The Gambia, known for its rich wildlife and vibrant birdlife.
I started my 2017 project with a picture of a bird on a tree. It's only fitting that I concluded with a picture of another bird.
Over the past year, this project enabled me to:
- Take almost 40,000 photos;
- Get charged by a bear;
- Have a couple of close calls on snowy roads;
- Slip, destroy some gear, and get a concussion;
But it also allowed me to share some of the beautiful things in my life with you.
It gave me the opportunity to make new friends online, particularly among fellow photographers, photography enthusiasts, and people who simply love photographs.
Above all, I learned a lot and I'm proud of having completed the project without skipping a single day, no matter how busy life got. I tend to be a sprinter more than a marathoner, so this was a great exercise in patience and constancy.
What's next:
- I don't plan to do another 365 project in 2018. This was fun but a serious time commitment;
- I have many photos that I have not shared with you, so you'll continue to see new photos published in the future, perhaps just not daily;
- I will continue to take photos often in 2018. I'm hoping to do a lot more people photography as well. So even if you are not a model, feel free to let me know if you are available;
- I plan to self-publish a book with the highlights of the project at some point in 2018. I will announce it here when that happens.
So stay tuned, and thank you so much for sharing this amazing journey with me.
Much love, 💖
Tony
