For a magazine assignment that I thought had the potential to be slightly creepy. And threatening. I think it works.

After a few drinks, I was hoping to see the ole one-eyed newt.

I got better.

Some memories and opinions of him: When the diner-time topics are quantum mechanics or evolutionary biology or political history, Newt is brilliant, selfless and charming. Then I read the papers on what he says in political mode, and it's surreal. I think Newt is much smarter than Krugman gives him credit for, but with the churlish competitive streak of a debater who just wants to win with any argument that can carry the day. The rules of engagement are set by others; the positions set by chance. The world is his stage, and when on stage, he decouples acting as an art.

I first met him in 2001 around a number of meetings about nanotech and then I reviewed his draft book on BioThreat (excerpt here), which opens with: “Biological warfare, biothreat, is the largest threat to the human race, a substantially bigger threat than nuclear war.“

Sandia’s SpinDx device features centrifugal microfluidics, or “lab-on-a-disk” technology, which uses centrifugal forces to manipulate samples and reagents through microfluidic channels implanted on disks that are of the same size as a standard CD or DVD.

Hundreds of growing Bacillus anthracis Sterne spores under a fluorescent microscope create a glittering depiction of scientific inquiry. More importantly, the bacteria offer a safer way to study anthrax disease. Bacillus anthracis, similar to the strain that causes anthrax, is a surrogate, not harmful, and is helping researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to enhance biological threat detection strategies. PNNL’s study of the bacteria provides new knowledge that could lead to the development of a technology that takes advantage of a simple smartphone microscope to rapidly detect and identify biothreats. Such a small, convenient device would provide a new resource to first responders who must rapidly assess dangerous situations and make quick decisions. The research has been funded through PNNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

Even warnings of biothreathsand other posters urging Newyorkers to “Stay Home. Stay safe. It’s the law.” can’t stop people from waiting in line for the Carnegie Deli.

Sadly, the posted threats of bioharzards and imminent death didn’t look out of place to me. It’s the fake plants and grass around them that looked suspicious… turns out it was all for a movie shoot. So is that Sci Fi or a historical documentary?
