At a friend's BBQ, one of he guests had some amazing tattoos, of which, I really liked this eye that was on his inner bicep. Part of my Unusual Album flickr.com/photos/22666370@N08/sets/72157668650899833
The air in the Smurf Village usually smelled like sweet Smurfberries and freshly spun sugar. This was thanks to Baker Smurf, a master of his craft whose croissants were lighter than a breeze and whose tartlets could make Grouchy Smurf crack a reluctant smile.
Lately, though, the bakery smelled less like vanilla and more like a fish market at low tide.
Baker Smurf stood in his restaurant, his chef hat perched perfectly, leaning on his rolling pin. He had purposely walked away from his latest creation to clear his mind. It just wasn't working. A pale, glistening cream made of whipped cod liver oil, piped carefully into a tart shell dusted with chopped sea urchin spines.
With no customers, Baker Smurf thought back on the events. When he had sampled it, he immediately gagged, leaning against the counter as his knees went weak.
"Gross," he whispered, wiping his mouth with his apron. "Absolute, unmitigated garbage."
He slumped onto a flour sack, putting his head in his hands. He was turning forty-two Smurf-years old this summer. He had mastered every classic pastry in the Grand Smurf Codex. He had made thousand-layer puff pastries. He had sugar-blown full-sized statues of Papa Smurf. But lately, every morning felt the same. Bake, glaze, serve, repeat. Where was the edge? Where was the danger?
He didn't just want to bake good pastries anymore. He wanted to push boundaries. He wanted to pioneer the savory-sweet frontier.
"Sea urchin and cod liver oil," he muttered to himself, his eyes wide and slightly unhinged. "The brininess of the sea! The rich, buttery depth of the oil! It’s avant-garde! It’s revolutionary! Why won’t it work?!"
Baker Smurf's reverie was interrupted as the door to the bakery creaked open, and Hefty Smurf walked in, flexing his tattooed bicep. "Hey, Baker! Smurfberry muffin, please. And... uh... what is that smell? Did someone leave a dead trout in the oven?"
"It’s not a dead trout, Hefty!" Baker snapped, jumping up and tossing his arms in the air. "It’s innovation! It’s the Sea-Breeze Eclair! But the emulsification keeps breaking, and the fishiness overwhelms the delicate ocean flavor of the urchin! I’m a failure, Hefty. A washed-up, one-trick Smurf who can only make stupid, delicious fruit tarts!"
Hefty blinked, looking genuinely concerned. "Baker... mate... cod liver oil is what Papa Smurf makes us swallow when we get the flu. It's supposed to taste bad."
"That's just what Big Pastry wants you to think!" Baker cried, pacing the floor.
Hefty slowly backed toward the door. "Right. Well... I'm just gonna grab an apple from the orchard. You... hang in there buddy."
Left alone again, Baker thought about the spiky sea urchin shell resting on his workbench. With a newfound, desperate determination, he turned and went back to the kitchen! His whisk was waiting! He wasn't going to let a midlife crisis defeat him. If he had to whip cod liver oil until his arms fell off, by Papa Smurf, he was going to make this monstrosity edible.

Profondément ancrés en eux;
Leurs tentacules aux noirs réseaux
Arthritiques et compliqués
Prennent un air de barbelés
Qui voudraient enlaidir
L'azur.
C'est beau, de les voir s'empoigner
Et tournoyer, comme honteux
De leur aspect hivernal, brut,
Perclus
De colère noueuse.

Haven't had a chance to edit the rest of the Zion pictures, but I have a backlog of photos from the last two month that still need to be posted.
Fun shot from the gym. This is my first Flickr photo with my Yasicha Auto Yashinon-DX 50mm f/1.4.
This is an outtake from my shooting blind photo session. I walked ahead of Jasper and my wife, Jean, with my camera down by my ankle and pointed generally in their direction. Sometimes makes for so interesting compositions. As you can see, Jasper’s enjoying himself. And as you can see, Jean’s been working out. Check out that bicep!

Thanks all for checking in and I'll update when I'm in my own bed.

This image shows the 10m microwave telescope SPT and the smaller BICEP telescope together with the Moon at South Pole. Both experiments are measuring the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) to study the beginning of the Universe.
I liked how the shadows played across this beautiful white pine in Richfield County Park, Genesee County. I call this nearly-90 year tree (this was a WPA site), The Strongman. Check out its bicep flex! It looks like it stood up well to our harsh winter here, which is ebbing.
People historically associate baseball with the United States of America. This image includes parts of a Tommy John-signed baseball card and Major League baseball. Tommy John surgery was named after this player...he was the first patient who ever had part of his bicep added to his elbow so he could resume his playing career as a MLB pitcher.
The Dark Sector at South Pole houses three main science buildings: MAPO, SPT and IceCube.
Huge news recently came from a project housed in SPT (South Pole Telescope). The project, BICEP2, discovered evidence of the rapid expansion of the universe (essentially lingering gravity waves from the Big Bang). SPT is the building in the back with the huge telescope. The building in the foreground is MAPO and looks at similar things as SPT does.
Ice Cube is not in the image. Ice Cube has hundreds of 'doms' in the ice that detect neutrinos.

My colleague James Casey had to go out to the IceCube Lab (ICL) here at South Pole, after a power supply failed. So he had to go out to the Dark Sector, a region at South Pole where radio and RF signals are forbidden due to the sensitive CMB experiments SPT, BICEP, and SPUD/KECK, which are located there as well.

This raccoon pair likes to stick together, they used some nice teamwork skills to avoid having to actually jump to get to the top of the fence and worked on some of those bicep muscles to do a pull up to get to the top.

I have been in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico the past few weekends working on a calendar project for a friend. We were out walking around on Saturday afternoon and came upon this fellow who was dancing on a street corner to some music (although I think he would have been dancing even if there was no audible music.) He seemed to be enjoying himself and the attention he was getting from the passing cars and pedestrians. I asked him to pose for a picture and he struck a pose to show me his bicep. Unfortunately I wasn’t fast enough to frame it properly and before I knew it he was moving to the music again. I liked the photo even if there is a bit of sadness in his eyes.
Strobist lighting information: I was fortunate to have an assistant with me and he was carrying a 400 watt second Dynalite studio strobe with a small beauty dish attached. The light was powered by a Vagabond battery pack. We worked out a distance that would produce the proper exposure and my assistant would try to approximate it as we set up each shot. This is a great way to work guerrilla style for street photography.
