These men are reading horse racing related newspapers. Unbelievable though it may seem, this picture was taken at the entrance of the Asakusa buddhist temple in Tokyo.
P&W's nocturnal train NR-2 from Plainfield, CT to New Haven, CT always came with a sure bet, you'd work 12 hours and most of the time outlaw. And by the way, don't call us if you have trouble. Hence was the case one night with Nick Palazini and another night that we were behind the 8 ball before we even turned a wheel. We managed to get our train together after only 3 hours and then with a 28 mile run of mostly 10 mph, things were not going well. The only bright spot was knowing that having a certain Amtrak dispatcher at the wheel, we'd have time for a quick photo. Our train is shown along the banks of the Thames River in Ledyard, CT with the Mohegan Sun Casino in the distance. P&W train NR-2 has GE's 3907-4001-4002-4004 with 69 cars in tow. It was a horrible consist, with all that power, I think only 2 units were operating. The local neighbors weren't all too happy about the flashes, and didn't believe we were the crew. After some convinicing they decided not to call the local authorities Once underway again, it was off to New Haven and an eventual outlaw in Groton. Just another night on NR-2. Taken on December 4, 2014.

Even een recente foto ;)
In december 2020 keert de nachttrein terug op het Nederlandse spoor in de vorm van een ÖBB Nightjet - deze trein gaat rijden van Amsterdam naar Wenen (O) of München (D) / Innsbruck (O). Tussen Köln (D) en Amsterdam verzorgd NS Internationaal de tractie van deze trein.
De tractie die gekozen is bestaat uit een locomotief uit de BR 193, beter bekend onder de naam Vectron. Bij ELL (European Locomotive Leasing) zijn 2 locomotieven gehuurd. De 193 766 is al sinds augustus dit jaar in Nederland en wordt gebruikt voor opleiding en test ritten.
Onderdeel van de opleiding / test ritten is het leveren van tractie voor 1 slag van de IC Berlijn tussen Amsterdam en Bad Bentheim (D) vice versa - nl. de ICB 143 / 148. Woensdag 21 oktober was de eerste rit , onder zeer slechte weersomstandigheden, vrijdag 23 oktober was het weer beter hoewel de zon het op het moment supreme het liet afweten :D
NS Eloc 193 766 komt met aan de haak de rijtuigen van IC Berlijn 148 langs industrieterrein Harselaar (bij Barneveld) op weg van Bad Bentheim (D) naar Amsterdam CS.

In December 2020, the night train will return to the Dutch tracks in the form of an ÖBB Nightjet - this train will run from Amsterdam to Vienna (A) or Munich (D) / Innsbruck (A). NS International provides the traction of this train between Köln (D) and Amsterdam.
The traction chosen consists of a locomotive from the BR 193, better know as a Vectron. Two locomotives have been rented from ELL (European Locomotive Leasing). The 193 766 has been in the Netherlands since August this year and is used for training and test drives.
Part of the training / test rides is to provide traction for one leg of the "IC Berlin" between Amsterdam and Bad Bentheim (D) vice versa - namely the ICB 143 / 148. Wednesday October 21 was the first ride, under very bad weather conditions, Friday October 23 the weather was better although the sun was failing at the moment supreme :D
NS Eloc 193 766 passes hauling the carriages of IC Berlin 148 along the Harselaar industrial area (near Barneveld) on the way from Bad Bentheim (D) to Amsterdam CS.
Bet a lot of you know the feeling when your stuck in because of the weather, especially the last few months, here in the Northeast. Well undeterred by the conditions I ventured out, down to my local beach and Steetley Pier.
The conditions were horrible but challenging and you know what they say "practice makes perfect" Well I need as much practice as I can get lol!

Collecting slides over the last 2.5 years or so has been an unexpectedly rewarding project. It has provided me with so much extra knowledge for my interest in local operations and for my model railroading, it has allowed me to revisit old memories, and it's just been really great.
I recently had another chance to revisit an event I never forgot about;
On Saturday August 10th 2002, I was in Brunswick with my grandma and grandpa watching trains that evening. We got a pizza and tailgated in the parking lot. I had just turned 14 and Brunswick was like a railfan mecca to me.
Towards the end of the evening, maybe around 930pm, a set of three engines consisting of a CSX C30-7, an exCR C36-7, and exCR SD60I #8750 backed out from the yard, across Maple Ave, and tied onto a set of orange ballast cars that had been sitting under the over pass. I think the cars had been sitting on either track 34 or the runaround. Shortly after, the CPL dwarf showed a medium clear from 4-runner to number two, and the ballast train pulled out of Brunswick. I remember seeing the glow inside the cab of 8750 from the computer screens. I want to say they called themselves W055 on the radio.
My grandmother (of all people) said "I bet we can beat them to Washington Grove" (near there house, where the train would pass eventually). Both myself and my grandpa told her there is no way we would beat the train; the trackage had a much shorter distance to cover to get to Washington Grove than we did. We'd be taking 340 out of Brunswick all the way to Frederick to meet I-270 south. Then we'd have to exit, and take some local streets to finally be trackside.
My grandmother, her lead foot, and us in tow flew down the highway in their 2000 Town and Country van. I had my scanner still on, but we were too far from the tracks to hear the train calling signals.
We crossed the grade crossing at Washington Grove, and sure enough there was a clear on #2 track at the Derwood Dip signal. By the time we turned into the gravel lot at the MARC station, the gates were going down behind us, and the bright lights of the eastbound were ripping into view in front of us. I remember throwing open my door as the train screamed by at track speed or close to it.
My grandmother was delighted in asserting her victory over beating the train from Brunswick to Washington Grove that night. We all had a good time, and she still talks about it to this day.
Fast forward almost 20 years to the day later, and I find a slide of that exact same train from the next day, Sunday 8-11-02. The train is seen tied down at Doswell Va on #4 track in the yard. The train was likely empty or mostly empty, and is staging at Doswell until a C&O crew would take it over the Piedmont Sub to Verdon for another load of ballast. My jaw hit the floor when I saw this slide while scrolling on ebay. Once again as life came full circle for me, I saw this slide while sitting on my own freight train stopped at the signal in Bayview. Dreams do come true I guess.
Objectively, the slide is nothing special; the train is stopped, headlights off....far track side, bottom of the wheels cut off....a little wonky on the composition...but to me, it's now one of my favorite slides.
