Made for a wonderful lady; Jane Hufschmid. This is a chair made in solid rosewood and upholstered in Swedish leather. The chair was made to sit in a corner of a room and only be entered from the right hand side as viewed from the back. There is a wonderful Vavona burr on the back of the chair.
My clients came to me with a request for two fire side chairs for their Devon home, a chair for Fenella that protected her from the drafts of the door that was behind where the chair would sit and wrap round her and "Oh she would like a twiddly bit, just one, something frivolous." So that is what we made...Or, rather, that was what Daren Millman, who was the senior craftsman responsible for these pieces, and Geoff Green who worked with him, made. Craftsmen get little press and recognition, which is wrong, these guys worked with care and great intelligence to produce forms that would test the best makers in the world today.
"The Psychiatrists Chair", funny name but that's what happens when you work with psychiatrists. "There are no sharp corners on a psychiatriss only smooth flowing shapes and resillance" So that is what he got. Made in Rosewood with leather upholstery

My client had a small circular purpose built writing room with a thatched roof and a tiny wood burning stove in the garden of her home. She is a writer and had built the work surface of her new writing room just under the window, as one would. She then discovered that this meant that she needed a high stool to sit on, but she didn't want a stool. She wanted a large chair that she could wriggle around on and sit crossed legged, more like a high writing platform...."Zoe" the writers chair. Made for me by craftsman Nick Chandler.

"John" is a man's chair. No poncey upholstery, just bare wood and little else. John would not even allow us to polish his chair. He insisted that a thin layer of wax and the effects of time would be sufficient to patinate his chair and he is quite right that's all it needs.

These are the last in the love chairs series, until someone else comes to me with a soppy story. Made as a set of four pairs of chairs to go around a large dining table. The first of the love chairs I got married in. The second I made for a lovely skittish lady, then I swore I would never make another pair. Until, that is, I met a lovely, loving, young couple with a wonderful home and art collection going back to Sir Christopher Wren.

Special chairs for special people. This is Tom's Chair, an example of hand-made unique chairmaking. Like a suit of clothes fitted to you, this is a chair fitted to Tom. It fits his home; fitting the space in Tom's library that it was designed for; and it fits Tom. A great chair design of this type should express something about its owner, not that Tom is in any way made of wood and leather but like his chair Tom is a class act. We all, to an extent, describe ourselves to others by the clothes we wear, the cars we drive and the homes we inhabit, furniture designed with you in mind and 'hand made just for you' is just another way of achieving this goal of quality self expression.
