Today we went to Al Ittihad Square Park at Sharjah for a meet-and-greet with fellow Bengali's in UAE. This is located at Sharjah's Corniche, i.e. seafront, and is a lively place especially in the evening. Families of all nationalities flock to this park with portable chairs, snacks and even full blown barbecue equipment and dinner. Nearby was the local mosque that was lit brilliantly at night. Fortunately, I was carrying all my camera equipment, including the tripod for night-time long-exposure shots. I set up my equipment and took this shot that embodies a little bit of Sharjah at night, a city that revels in good cheer and social life amongst beautiful Islamic cultural artifacts and art.

Poila Boishakh (Bengali: পহেলা বৈশাখ Pôhela Boishakh or পয়লা বৈশাখ Pôela Boishakh) is the first day of the Bangla Calendar. Poila Boishakh is celebrated in a festive manner in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, as well as by Bengali people in Tripura. Hence, Poila Boishakh connects all ethnic Bengalis irrespective of religious and regional differences. In Bangladesh, Poila Boishakh is a national holiday and in West Bengal it is a public holiday. It falls on April 14 or April 15 of the Gregorian calendar depending on the use of the new amended or the old Bangla calendar respectively. In Bangladesh, it is celebrated on April 14 according to the official amended calendar designed by the Bangla Academy.

Poila or Pohela Boishakh is also known as Noboborsho (নববর্ষ), or Bengali New Year, as it is the first day of the first month of Boishakh in the Bengali calendar. This day is a very festive time for Bengalis.

Spotted on a Safari in the famous Pairi Daiza Park. One can only feel small face to face to this fantastic animal..

On 21st of February in 1952 Pakistan authorities, refusing to grant Bangla --- the language spoken by people in the then East Pakistan --- let loose police to brutally thwart a movement by Bengalis over demand that Bangla become a state language. Several lives had been lost - students and others - in that savagery which eventually achieved Bangla its due honour in Pakistan and later the glory of International Mother Language.

Followed by cries of mothers who lost their children, hopelessness of women who lost their husbands, and others who lost their future in hands of political terrorists.

Sindoor Khela (Vermilion Play)

A colourful farewell festival on ‘Bijoya Dashami’ (last day of the Durga Puja), marked with 'Sindoor Khela' or, smearing of the red vermilion. The ritual is famous throughout Bengal and is believed to be dated back to time when the tradition of Durga puja started nearly 400 years ago.

Bengali married women adorning traditional dresses converge at the makeshift temples to bid farewell to the Goddess and her four children with vermilion (sindoor) and sweets. After bidding her farewell, the married women smear one another with sindoor, and greet each other with sweets, and pray for their long and happy married lives.

Who could be happier than us?

From dawn to dusk.....

We play...

We laugh....

We roam in joy...

A moment of eternal peace and happiness. Taken from Narayangonj, Bangladesh.

Bengali, Bengali,

Oh, shelve your Western plans,

and understand that life is hard enough when you belong here.

A silver-studded rim that glistens

and an ankle-star that...blinds me.

A lemon sole so very high

which only reminds me, to tell you.

So I break the news gently

I break the news to you gently

"Shelve your plans"
