Analyzing Farm Ownership Patterns: A Biophysical and Agri-demographic Segmentation of Catchments in the Lake Simcoe Watershed (2025)

This poster serves as a brief overview of this MRP, serving as an initial analysis for a two year study being conducted by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) alongside Toronto Metropolitan University and University of Waterloo in identifying priority zones for tailored Best Management Practices (BMPs) based on biophysical and social attributes among the watershed.
Covering 3,400 km², the LSW is one of southern Ontario’s most important freshwater systems, providing vital ecosystem services and generating approximately $900 million annually—largely driven by agriculture, which occupies about 50% of the watershed’s land area. While watersheds in Ontario, including the LSW, have traditionally been classified based on hydrological and biophysical criteria, they are also complex socio-economic systems. BMPs are designed to mitigate agriculture’s environmental impacts, but research suggests their effectiveness depends heavily on farmers’ willingness and capacity to implement them. Research increasingly highlights the need to integrate both socio-economic and biophysical factors for effective watershed management.
In particular, literature suggests that analyzing farm ownership patterns provides valuable insight into agricultural behaviours, management practices, and the willingness to adopt sustainable approaches.This study investigates the relationship between farm ownership patterns and agri-demographic characteristics (e.g., farm size, age, gender, income, capital, management) and their influence on BMP adoption. By applying data reduction and multivariate clustering techniques, the research integrates these socio-economic variables with key biophysical data (e.g., land cover, soil permeability, drainage, nutrient units) to delineate zones that reflect both environmental conditions and agri-demographic dynamics. The findings will inform the broader research goal which is to guide the implementation of tailored BMPs that are environmentally effective but also economically and socially feasible.
