The language we use to define bears and bear activity shapes public perception and in turn ours as well. Many people mistakenly describe bears as "attacking" a bird feeder or "attacking" a structure, when in fact, this is simply a natural behaviour that bears use in the wild in order to access food, for instance, when they smash logs to get at the ant larvae within. Bear biologists and wildlife officials define an incident as an "attack" only when direct physical contact is made with a person. Therefore, logistically, a bear does not “attack” a structure, a car or a trash can. Using the the term randomly, insinuates aggression and creates fear. If we care about the lives of our wild neighbours, it is in their best interest not to use terminology that unnecessarily evokes overly sensationalistic language.
Most fatal, aggressive attacks occur in really remote areas, extremely few in urban situations, even though bears in human-populated areas have the most contact with people. There are occasionally minor injuries, but most often the result is only property damage. If you suspect that there are bears around, stay alert and make noise so as not to surprise a bear at close range and provoke a possible defensive reaction.
Garbage, bird feeders, vehicles, BBQs, fruit trees and scented items are the most common attractants that draw bears into neighbourhoods.
