NOÇÕES BÁSICAS NA CRIAÇÃO DO CANÁRIO-DA-TERRA
Paulo Rui de Camargo DESCRIÇÃO: O canário-da-terra está classificado cientificamente como Sicalis flaveola. A subspécie brasiliensis é popularmente conhecida como canário-da-terra verdadeiro, chapinha, canário-da-telha, canário-de-briga, cabecinha-de-fogo, canário-de-bulha e outras denominações vulgares regionais.
DISTRIBUIÇÃO GEOGRÁFICA: Esta subespécie tem dilargada área de distribuição e habitat no território brasileiro. Abrange os estados do Norte-Nordeste, iniciando no Maranhão até a região sudeste, atingindo Minas Gerais até o sul do Estado de São Paulo e algumas localidades do norte do Estado do Paraná. Daí para baixo, até o Rio Grande do Sul, incluindo o Estado do Mato Grosso do sul, existe a subespécie pelzelni, conhecida pelos nomes populares de canário-da-terra do Sul, canário-do-Oeste, canário-do-Mato Grosso, canário-da-horta, canário-da-terra cinzento, canário do campo, e outros nomes regionais. Ele tem coloração cinza-amarelada, não tão intensa como a primeira subespécie aqui citada.
GENERALIDADES: As duas subspécies, segundo consta de dados oficiais (extraídos de relações de aves registradas em associações e clubes ornitológicos, bem como no IBAMA), o de canário-da-terra é a ave canora que possui, em nosso País, o maior número de exemplares cadastrados e mantidos em cativeiro. O canário-da-terra (CT) é muito conhecido e estimado pela maioria dos passarinheiros de quase todo o Brasil. A sua popularidade advém não só pelo seu canto, sua agilidade, elegância, fogosidade, índole belicosa, vivacidade, boa saúde, mas também por outros predicados, como, por exemplo, a facilidade de criação em gaiolas-criadeiras
