amazing columnar basalt rock formations on this outcropping in front of Staffa island, which is entirely formed by upfolding basalt colums creating the strangest twisted and twirling shapes.
After having been immersed in metropolitan life in several countries and continents I have gotten to the conclusion that I very much prefer these kind of skylines and canyons above urban ones. Each to their own, I know :)
we did a little hiking in those fantastic rocky landscapes of the Lofoten islands, here near Moskenes island. This is ever so rewarding with the constantly changing views onto the basalt mountains called Lofoten Wall, the array of vegetation and wild flowers and sometimes the splendid gazes over the Norwegian Sea
beautiful rockface of a mountain range along the Lofoten islands, mainly consisting of basalt rock. I find trheir beauty compelling and the weather scenarios involving them remarkable.
the peaks of the so called Lofoten Wall, steep and rugged basalt mountains forming a kind of backbone along the Lofoten archipelago. Here at Reinefjorden on Moskenes island.

a strange and wonderful kind of basalt rock mountains on the Norwegian Lofoten islands near Storvatnet. I loved these strange outcroppings like towers of a Troll Fortress :)
Happy Textural Tuesday!

We ventured along solitary secondary roads and stumbled upon this rather hidden lake flanked by mountains shrouded in mist and I was sure we had to have entered Asgard, the world of the Norse deitities and this ought to be beautiful Freya's bathtub :))

Cofrentes is a village 104 km from Valencia. The town is located at the confluence of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel. The economy is based on agriculture and livestock. Crops are cereals wheat, barley and maize, wine and olive trees. The economic activity of this town also revolves around its nuclear power plant. The Cofrentes nuclear power station covers practically the entire domestic consumption of the Valencian Community. There are many water sources in the area. The most important is the Los Hervideros well. Cofrentes has the only river route in the Valencian Province with a journey of 14 km one way and the same amount back, through the Canyons of Júcar in a modern boat of the same name. This boat is accessible all year round. Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the native flora and fauna, who can observe mountain goats, mouflons, wild boars or ospreys in the spectacularly beautiful cliffs that can be seen from the boat. Castillo de Cofrentes sits high above the river on a volcanic rock with a volcano on the other side of the river. Its origin is Islamic, at the time it served as a castle-fortress, so inaccessible height of 95 meters on which it stands, and palace-residence between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The castle of Cofrentes is a fortress built at 394 meters above sea level, the highest part of the capital of the municipality of the same name. It is built in basalt rock of volcanic origin, on one of the chimneys of the volcano Cerro de Agrás. Ceramic remains from the Roman, Iberian and Bronze Ages have been discovered on the site of the castle. the castle was declared a property of cultural interest. Photo taken at Puente de Hierro de Cofrentes, a bridge over the Cabriel river with a sublime style, overlooking Castillo de Cofrentes.
This one had a beach with almost white sand and pebbles and intensely turquoise waters. I felt so overwhelmed by all the beauty surrounding us, I was close to tears.

Finnstadpollen near Sandoya on the Lofoten islands, a long fjord reaching deep into this island. At its narrowest point (here) the waters are shallow at low tide and one can see the ground through the amazingly turquois waters, while white sands and beautiful rocks strewn all over the beach delight the eye.
a natural pond at the end of a waterfall sliding down an impressive basalt wall on the Lofoten islands, Norway. It looks like it might have been a bathing spot for Norse goddesses :)
For three weeks in February 2021 it snowed in eastern Washington and Northern Idaho followed by heavy rains melting our 15 inches of snow rapidly. I decided to drive 100 miles to see how the falls was flowing from the runoff since all along the Palouse River banks water was high.
This is a three shot horizontal panoramic with 30 second exposure at f9 ISO 50 to help capture the swirling motion of the pool. I’m also trying out a new toy, gold n blue polarizer for fun.
Reynisdrangar is a mystical place near Vik, located in southern Iceland. Several basalt pillars shoot straight up from the sea. The shore has basalt columns and a basalt cave. The sea is dangerous with sneaker waves. The tide might cut off your way out, so it is important to check the tide schedule before you walk beyond the basalt columns. Last year we went there at 03:00 am in the morning, shortly before sunrise. We had about two hours before the tide came in. This shot is at 4:30 am, one hour after sunrise.
I processed a realistic and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Lofoten islands fjord near Svolvaer. I could swear that every lake, every bay and every fjord on the Lofoten islands was sporting one and just one boat ... :)

Historically known as Puerto del Roque and later as Puerto del Tostón, this natural anchorage became a vital commercial hub for Fuerteventura following the Castilian conquest. For centuries, it served as a primary export point for livestock, grain, and orchilla—a sea lichen used to produce violet dye. Its strategic and economic importance was further enhanced in the 19th century with the construction of lime kilns around the harbor for the production and export of quicklime to other islands and Europe.
The port’s development is inseparable from its defensive history. In 1700, the Torre de Nuestra Señora del Pilar y San Miguel (commonly known as the Castillo del Tostón) was built on the ruins of an earlier 15th-century fortification called Rico Roque. Designed by engineer Claudio de L’Isle, this circular stone tower was equipped with a drawbridge and iron cannons to protect the harbor’s valuable trade from Berber, English, and French pirate raids.
Located in the southern part of the village, the port transitioned from a significant commercial gateway to its current role as a dedicated fishing harbor during the mid-20th century. Today, it remains a functional maritime site for the local artisanal fleet, situated directly beneath the historic watchtower that once secured the coastline.

ragged mountains, basalt rocks, hearty heather vegetation and rippled waters, everything a lover of textures can expect from a Lofoten spot.
there was this waterfall coming down all the way of its basalt rock slider into this shallow rockpool and from there going further to form a little river. For miles and miles not a single soul around and the entire Lofoten island retreat appeared to be our backyard ;)

The landscape showcases the spectacular cinder cone of the Teneguía volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). The distinct reddish-brown crater slopes form a striking contrast against the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Formed during a powerful eruption in 1971, this volcanic vent remains one of the most unique geological highlights of the archipelago.

As the sun dips low over Oʻahu’s North Shore, Waimea Bay surrenders to the quiet alchemy of twilight. The day's brilliant daylight softens into an extraordinary canopy of rich gold, amber, and deep violet, casting a warm glow across the gently sloping shore.
Silhouetted against the vibrant horizon, the dark basalt outcroppings stand as timeless sentinels against the Pacific. Waves roll in with a steady, soothing cadence, breaking into delicate, frothy white crests before washing across the sand. The wet shoreline acts as a natural mirror, reflecting the radiant fiery tones of the sky in a seamless ribbon of liquid bronze.
In this fleeting moment between day and night, the rushing surf and glowing horizon invite a sense of stillness—a peaceful pause to witness the quiet grand finale of another Hawaiian day.

here the mono version of "Who needs cities anyway" :) A completely different story it seems and yet I love it.
The legendary waves of Oahu's North Shore had finally begun their evening collapse, a slow, gentle surrender to the approaching night. But the sky wasn't finished. From the park grass, a perfect panorama unfolded, painted in the molten golds and electric oranges that only a Waimea winter sunset can deliver.
A singular, towering column of clouds, bruised and heavy with impending rain, provided the perfect charcoal contrast to the fire, catching the final, searing rays. As the day's primary players packed away their boards and gathered under the shoreline trees, a small, silhouetted group of local fishermen stood as silent sentinels by the water's edge, their lines cast against the powerful energy that was now a mere echo, ready to harvest from the rich Pacific currents while the last gold of the day kissed the horizon.
