The immense, weathered basalt columns of Piedra Parada frame the landscape with a sense of geological timelessness, casting deep shadows across the rugged canyon floor. Audrey Bergner pauses amidst the stark, monumental textures of this volcanic monolith region, her presence providing a human scale against the overwhelming geological formations of the Patagonian steppe. The soft, diffuse lighting emphasizes the rich, earthy tones of the sedimentary rock and the resilient desert scrub thriving in the arid basin. Every crevice and jagged peak tells a story of ancient volcanic activity that has shaped this desolate yet captivating expanse in the heart of Chubut province. Captured with a sharp focus that bridges the gap between the immediate foreground and the distant canyon walls, the composition highlights the spirit of exploration inherent to this iconic Argentine destination. The stillness of the afternoon air enhances the profound silence of the canyon, inviting a moment of reflection before the vastness of the wilderness. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Project 23.

On our second day of our 6 day All Ireland tour with Paddywagon Tours, we had a chance to explore the beauty of Northern Ireland, UK.

Without a doubt, the Giant's Causeway is a highlight of any visit to Northern Ireland. Renowned for its natural beauty, dramatic coastline and unique basalt column rock formations, the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland is one of the UK's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We had enough time to explore the site and walk along the coastline. It was really cool to step on the basalt columns. The mountain scenery was beautiful as well.

I did not see the basalt columns in Iceland and felt lucky to be able to see it at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Our guide also told us the story about Irish legend Fionn McCool.

The Vikings gave it this name as its columnar basalt reminded them of their houses, which were built from vertically placed tree-logs

The alkaline coarse-grained basalt formation with a structure of radial joints, at Hanasaki cape, Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan. Such pillow lava is formed when dolerite magma flows into the mud deposited on the sea floor. This national natural monument, with a diameter of 6m, is called “Kurumaishi” because of its wheel-like structure.
