The basalt columns of the Basilica Terrace, which demarcated the 5th/6th century Byzantine church that stood at this corner of the ancient city of Gadara, in Umm Qais, northern Jordan. Gadara was one of the prominent cities of the Decapolis, a group of ten Greco-Roman cities in the eastern Mediterranean, which flourished from the 3rd century BCE through the Roman and Byzantine periods. The church itself was destroyed by an earthquake in the 8th century.
We spent a bit over a week exploring southern France. From Lyon, to the Alps, then through Provence before wrapping up in the Ardeche.

Svartifoss (Black Fall) is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns (hexagonal basalt columns) which gave rise to its name.

This might not look like the floor to an old building (indeed its name is 'The Church Floor' and for many years, some people thought it was just that) but it's actually a series of very small, flat basalt columns which can be seen overhead. Or indeed, walked on.

Fingal's Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa. It is formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns, similar in structure to (and part of the same ancient lava flow as) the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and those of nearby Ulva.

This place was heaving with foreign tourists in unsuitable footwear. I just about managed to keep most of 'em off this shot.
