O Palácio Barriga Verde, sede da Assembleia Legislativa de Santa Catarina
O termo "Barriga Verde" é de significado bastante controverso, pois falta documentação histórica para dar embasamento à origem dessa palavra que identifica os nascidos no Estado brasileiro de Santa Catarina.
É um consenso entre os documentos históricos disponíveis que ele designava um regimento militar, o regimento de Infantaria de Linha da Ilha de Santa Catarina, baseado em Florianópolis, que usava uma larga faixa verde, como um cinturão, sob o dolmã do fardamento.
Os soldados catarinenses que usavam essa faixa destacaram-se na guerra contra o ditador Artigas do Uruguai, por sua valentia e pela destreza no domínio das armas. Formaram um lendário agrupamento e a expressáo passou a identificar o gentilico nascido no Estado de Santa Catarina.
Independente da origem ou do significado do termo, ele é assumido com orgulho pelos catarinenses. O Palácio Barriga Verde é sede do assembléia legislativa de Santa Catarina, casa parlamentar de 40 deputados. Várias casas comerciais, escolas, equipes esportivas, grupos de comunicação, associações não governamentais, entidades filantrópicas e inúmeras outras citações mantêm vivo o termo Barriga Verde.
