Spotted the nice reflections of the new-ish B&M at Efteling as I wandered past, so took some shots to process in HDR - luckily this type of coaster has a 'pause' for dramatic effect just before the first drop, so no ghosting problems with the different exposures this time.

Baron 1898

Baron 1898 is a steel Dive Coaster at the Efteling theme park. The first test ride was held on 8 May 2015, after construction of the track was completed, and the first manned operation was conducted on June 18, 2015. Music was created by the Brussels Philharmonie symphony orchestra and several producers, under the direction of René Merkelbach. The ride opened on July 1, 2015. It is the first dive coaster manufactured by B&M that doesn't feature a turn between the lift hill and the first drop.

The Story:

In 1898, the wealthy baron Gustave Hooghmoed (whose last name is a variation on the Dutch word for hubris) is led to discover a nearby cave that is rich in gold deposits by a spirit known as the Witte Wieven ("Wise women", "Dames Blanches" or "White ladies"); however, this spirit gives Hooghmoed the admonition that if he disturbs the gold in any way, he will suffer terrible consequences for the remainder of his life. In an attempt to circumvent the spirit's threat, Hoogmoed presses the destitute locals into working in his newly opened gold mine, where many of the workers suffer catastrophic accidents or are chased out of the cave by the "Witte Wieven" and her supernatural cohorts.

After the Baron is called out of his office to tend to an emergency in the mine shaft, mine overseer Laars will help guests into his specially designed mine elevator vehicles that are capable of traveling both vertically and horizontally. After the guests board the special mine cars, Laars and the machine shop are suddenly attacked by vengeful spirits of miners who have previously vanished under the influence of the "Witte Wieven". Before Laars's office apparently explodes, he sends the miners out of the mine; as the car ascends, a giant fireball bursts from the opening of the machine shop and almost reaches the rear car of the train. As the train is about to leave the mine, it stops as the "Witte Wieven" can be heard singing from the pit, from which smoke pours and lights can be seen. After a few seconds, the "Witte Wieven" scream, "You shall not evade my curse! Prepare to forfeit your lives!" as the miners plunge down the exit of the mine.

Guests to the Efteling theme park take on the role of one of Hooghmoed's employees; the queue begins with guests crossing an iron bridge over a creek to the mine's central offices and barracks, where guests will have an audience with the headstrong Baron who will, via an application of projections and animatronics, give his newly minted employees a brief safety lecture before sternly warning them against believing in the legend of the "Witte Wieven". Guests will move on from the office into the mine's machinery and maintenance shop to board the special mine cars. The spirits suddenly attack the cars; this effect is achieved through projection technology and animatronics (projected ghosts fly over rider's heads, and several pipes seem to burst.) As the train is about to drop off the lift, it stops as the "Witte Wieven" can be heard screaming from the pit, from which smoke pours. After a few seconds, the riders plunge 37.5 meters into a smoke-filled pit and pull out into an Immelmann loop and return into the same direction. After the first loop, riders experience airtime and drop a second time. This later leads the riders into a zero-g roll before traveling through a fast-paced spiral. The final brake run follows, which leads into the mine complex's equipment storage area, where guests disembark.

Python | Ruigrijk 20/05/2023 12h08

The themed area Ruigrijk as seen from the exit of rollercoaster Python. On the forground an MK1212 train in the second corkscrew looping. At the left the titan tracks of Joris en de Draak and ahead De Vliegende Hollander.

Ruigrijk

Ruigrijk is one of the five areas of the Efteling park. It is located in the southeast corner and is indicated on maps and signposts with the color red. From 1987 to 1999 this part of the park was called Oosterpark.

The name Ruigrijk is based on the fact that thrill rides such as the Python, Halve Maen, Joris en de Draak, the Vliegende Hollander and Baron 1898 can be found in this corner of the park.

It is one of the two areas where the steam train has a station.

In the early years of Efteling, most of Ruigrijk functioned as a parking lot, but you could also find the swimming pool here, which could be entered separately from the park via Entrance East. In later years, Entrance East served as an additional entrance to the entire park on busy days in the high season. With the arrival of the Python, the entrance with its associated parking lot disappeared in 1980 and this area became part of the rest of the park.

The arrival of the Python, the Game Gallery and De Corkscrew in 1981 quickly turned the east of the park into a square that attracted a large crowd. De Halve Maen was opened in 1982; in 1984 the Polka Marina and the Oude Tuffer appeared and poffertjes stall In den Spreeuwpot was replaced by fast food restaurant De Likkebaerd. At the end of the eighties, the swimming pool disappeared, after which that location became the place for the major park shows in the nineties.

Between 1985 and 2005, hardly anything changed in Ruigrijk, except for the arrival of the Pegasus, but Ruigrijk has expanded rapidly since 2005, and is especially popular with the somewhat older youth. This is due to the arrival of De Vliegende Hollander with catering point De Kombuys, Station de Oost and the roller coasters Joris en de Draak and Baron 1898. Since then, the area has had a clearly present nautical theme.

Attractions include Kinderspoor, Halve Maen, Game Gallery, Oude Tuffer, Nest!, Stoomtrein (station), Python, De Vliegende Hollander, Joris en de Draak and Baron 1898.

Closed attractions of Ruigrijk: Pegasus, Radiografisch Bestuurbare Bootjes, Kinder Winter Wonderland (Winter Efteling), Langlaufbaan 't Hijgend Hert (Winter Efteling), Polka Marina.

52 Weeks Project

A day well spent in De Efteling to make some beautiful photos of De Efteling in full Autumn...

Location: On the wooden platform of Casa Caracol in Anderrijk in themepark De Efteling. With on the background Baron 1898

Coordinates: 51°64'75" N 5°04'91" E

Reason: One of the quiet days off-season with beautiful weather weather and the Autumn colors are still beautiful.

De Efteling: The Efteling is a fantasy-themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel in the Netherlands. The attractions are based on elements from ancient myths and legends, fairy tales, fables, and folklore.

The park was opened in 1952. It has since evolved from a nature park with a playground and a Fairytale Forest into a full-sized theme park. It now caters to both children and adults with its cultural, romantic, and nostalgic themes, in addition to its wide array of amusement rides.

It is the largest theme park in the Netherlands and one of the oldest theme parks in the world. It is twice as large as the original Disneyland park in California and antedates it by three years. Annually, the park has nearly 5 million visitors. In 2016, it was the third most visited theme park in Europe, behind Disneyland Paris and Europapark. Over the years, it has received over 125 million visitors. In 2017, the park attracted a record number of around 5.18 million visitors. [ Wikipedia 12/2018 ]

The waiting area of Baron 1898 dive coaster has been made corona and social distancing proof. The principle is very simple that you have to wait in the white marked areas until the next white marked area is free. Red is for walking on and not stopping. On March 11, 2020, the corona virus (COVID-19) was officially classified as a pandemic, a global epidemic. This led to the closure of Efteling from Saturday, March 14 to Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

Efteling appealed for government support through the Emergency Fund Bridging Employment scheme for 3,300 employees who are now at home, but who continue to be paid.

Based on a reservation system, the park was reopened with limited capacity from 20 May. The days before had already been tested with employees, residents of the reopened Bosrijk and subscription holders. The Efteling Hotel and holiday park Efteling Loonsche Land also opened again on that date.

The park has been modified in many ways; for example, plexiglass splash guards have been placed, the capacity of attractions is severely limited and shows such as Raveleijn are not running. In the Fairytale Forest a one-way route is indicated with signs and arrows on the pavement. [ Wikipedia ]

Baron 1898 25/08/2022 16h56

In the summer there is summer entertainment in various places in July and August 2022. At Baron 1898 De Kompels show themselves: gold-coloured miners in overalls.

't Melkhuysje 25/08/2022 17h01

't Melkhuysje is a catering point with, among other things, milkshakes and churros at Baron 1898.

The issue desk is located in the foot of the headframe of the Rijksmijn, so right below the highest point of the attraction. Above the window is the name and a logo of two milk bottles in a carrying handle.

The catering point is thematically related to the attraction because in the past miners were obliged to drink milk after a long day of working in the mines to get dust and soot out of the body - by loosening mucus.

On the hiking trail nearby hangs a sign with the name of the catering point and the exhortation "Quench your thirst here after every descent".

The station building is richly decorated, with a landing and large overhanging roof with chalet-style wood ornaments, constructed from approximately 300,000 bricks with distinctive horizontal patterns. The name "Rijksmijn Baron 1898" is placed above the door. Next to the station building is a 22 meter high chimney and an enormous shaft tower with the characteristic large wheels for the mine lift.

The park has been modified in many ways; for example, plexiglass splash guards have been placed, the capacity of attractions is severely limited and shows such as Raveleijn are not running. In the Fairytale Forest a one-way route is indicated with signs and arrows on the pavement. [ Wikipedia ]

Baron 1898 13/09/2019 16h00

The bridge near the dive coaster Baron 1898 seen from a gondala of Gondoletta. It's all about the details.

Casa Caracol 24/06/2020 15h34

The ambiance around Piraña has everything to do with Mexico and South America and especially the Maya culture. Similarly, the catering point Casa Caracol.

Casa Caracol

Casa Caracol is a catering point on the Piraña square in the Anderrijk. Behind the catering point is a large shaded terrace above the water of the former Canoe pond. The catering point has a diverse range of wraps, warm panini, fair-trade delicacies and various hot and cold drinks.

Casa is Spanish for home, Caracol is the name of a great old Mayan city in Belize, which dates from 1200 BC. until 1050 AD. was inhabited. Many excavations were carried out in the twentieth century. Caracol is Spanish for snail, and more commonly spiral; probably the name of the city refers to its supply roads.

Hooghmoed 08/05/2025 18h35

We are looking here at the location of a new attraction for 2026; Hooghmoed!

In the spring of 2025, Efteling announced that they would open a fill-in attraction next to the Baron in 2026. This triple free-fall tower will be themed like its larger neighbor, Baron 1898.

This attraction is designed for little daredevils who aren't yet brave enough or allowed to ride the Baron. Construction will begin after the summer of 2025. Baron 1898 tells the story of Baron Hooghmoed, who puts visitors to work mining for him in the mine. The attraction's passengers essentially become miners.

Those who enter Hooghmoed will take on a different role: they will be chimney sweeps for the eponymous baron. The attraction consists of three identical free-fall towers, each several meters tall, from the German supplier Zierer. They will be positioned next to a large chimney. Looopings announced the project in January.

In April, it was announced that three units had been ordered. A day later, an initial design, designed by Karel Willemen, was released. "The attraction is smaller in scale and therefore contributes to the capacity and range of attractions for a wider target group," says Efteling about the investment.

One of the many questions about what can and cannot be done in the attraction during the corona pandemic. This sign is located near the entrance of Baron 1898 dive coaster.

Efteling and the Corona Crisis

On March 11, 2020, the corona virus (COVID-19) was officially classified as a pandemic, a global epidemic. This led to the closure of Efteling from Saturday, March 14 to Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
