A closer up view of the old barge trapped on the weir at Castleford.
The river was quite full that night and I liked the swirling effect of the water and the way the light lead up to and around the hull.

La barge hudsonienne est un grand limicole, possédant un long bec légèrement recourbé vers le haut et orné d’une extrémité foncée, avec la base rougeâtre. Il a aussi de longues pattes noirâtres.
L’adulte en été est d’une couleur rousse intense, s’étendant de la poitrine au ventre. La poitrine et les flancs sont densément rayés, alors que l’abdomen est plus finement barré. Les côtés du cou et de la tête sont gris pâle avec des rayures foncées denses, contrastant avec la poitrine rousse. La queue est noire avec une large bande blanche à la base.
L’adulte en hiver a les parties supérieures, la tête, le cou et la poitrine unis gris ardoise, et un sourcil court et clair. Les ailes portent des rayures foncées et une bande blanche plus étroite que chez la barge à queue noire, très distincte en vol.

Un Pluvier argenté ( à droite ) poursuivait sans relâche cette barge en vol. Le manège dura plusieurs minutes.
Down near Burlington Iowa on the mighty Mississippi River a barge move down and under the railway lift. Once the barge goes by - they lower the track section back down so trains can cross the river.

Once a common boat, used to bring goods into central London from the estuary and beyond, only a few Thames sailing barges have been preserved. The flat bottomed boat could access canals and the hinged mast lowered to go under bridges. In rougher seas the leeboards could be lowered for stability as it had such a shallow keel.

MV Syntan, an ex-working barge previously operated by Richard Hodgson’s Tannery to carry hides and other tanning materials from Hull docks to the Beverley Beck, and then by road to the Tannery which was situated in Flemingate.
Syntan now acts as a museum, heritage centre and community resource for meetings, parties and so on. Seen on the Humber during The Queen Platinum Jubllee Celebrations .
