One of our DLT tapes got stuck in the drive. The support technician suggested removing the tape itself from the tape cartridge to see if we could get it unstuck. (didn't' work). The first backup on Time Capsule takes a very long time. It was going to take so long that I'd have to leave the computer on overnight.
I decided to move the computer to the dining room, because surprisingly the Time Capsule makes more noise than my iMac when it's operating. I can't sleep with my iMac on so trying to do so with Time Capsule too would be a nightmare. When I got up this morning the backup was complete.
