To ensure mission readiness at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Department of Defense partnered with Enchanted Rock to deliver a long-duration electrical resiliency solution. Operating since 2022, the system protects against both planned and unplanned grid outages.
A Texas pediatric hospital, burdened by years of unreliable diesel generators, was facing growing risks to critical systems and the safety of young patients during increasingly common grid outages. When looking for a new backup power solution, they decided to look beyond traditional diesel generators and instead turned to a natural gas microgrid.
They needed a system to provide options for the emergency system configuration to support code-required loads, chilled water system equipment, and full-facility hospital loads (normal and emergency), while taking into account future expansion. They were also looking for reliability and redundancy options to ensure power availability at all times, demand response ready and support of the entire campus including the hospital’s central utility plant.
Enchanted Rock provided the campus with a 6.4 MW medium voltage microgrid system that can disconnect from the electric utility and operate autonomously to enhance resilience. The microgrid is supported by the local electric utility and connected to the existing natural gas pipeline network, which provides a cleaner, more sustainable fuel supply. The hospital’s approach to full-facility backup power promotes a safer future for their critical services and the environment, while accomplishing their mission of making life better for children.
