Nice train, but a recommendation, especially in hot weather: When ticketing, do NOT accept a ticket in the first three or four coaches of the train (A,B,C & D) because they're too close to the engine. I rode this train two years on a row, and and the engineer blows the train whistle at every crossing and at EVERY CURVE to warn whatever might be on the tracks ahead, which is a thousand or more whistles. If you're in front of the train, you're that much closer to the whistle and it gets real aggravating after 500 blasts. If the weather is hot, in December or January, the passengers open the doors and windows to cool the train (which is not air conditioned) and you get the whistle louder through the open windows, plus you get the combustion gases from the engine. Farther back in the train is much, much better on all accounts. All seat tickets are assigned and you can't escape the noise and smells by changing cars; it is prohibited to pass between cars.

I shared a taxi from Kota Bharu with these friendly Brits. We're off to find the ferry terminal now.
