Chinese traditional medicine : Moxa stick . It’s a remedy I ofthen use for back pain, with much benefit.
This end of the stick is about 3 cm long and 2 cm in diameter.
My back is in spasm.
The picture shows how it feels, like molten metal searing through my spine when I move in the wrong direction, or sit incorrectly. Tonight is a painful night to be me
ATLANTIC CITY USA, 1929. This is a photo from a rediscovered photo album that once belonged to Edy Hartenberger, acrobat from Maria Trost/ Vienna in Austria, living in Berlin (See introduction and other photo's in the Orellys set) Most people portrayed in the album are other artists or their family. He was on a US tour with his family and photographed this girl, it says on the back her name is Olly Adler in Atlantic city in 1929.There was the boxing promotor Olson Adler, there were the Adlers who had the corsage business in A.C., and of course there was Felix Adler. There were also the Adler's in Yiddish theatre (Stella Adler et al). But she could have been a relation of the 'media Adlers' of the Lee Corporation in Iowa who had plenty of interests in the 'Keith Circuit' of performers that the Hartenbergers worked in, their involvement with stage and variety made that the Orpheum Theatre in Davenport, Iowa, was renamed the Adler Theatre. Didn't know if there is any connection with any of these Adlers. Because it was likely she was holidaying or working in this resort in A.C. She could have been from....well, anywhere at all!!! She might well have been from Vienna and they met in A.C as fellow countrymen- there were lots of Adlers in Vienna (One of which the eminent psychotherapist Alfred Adler, was on tour in the US himself in 1929 and had brought his family along. unfortunately, none of his daughters was named Olly or anything like it, or they might have fitted the bill wonderfully) If she had been from Vienna, unless she stayed in the US, she might not have survived the war. I found a claims commission denial to the effects of an Czech Olga Adlerova (which is the customary Slavik female version of Adler) which could not be matched conclusively to the account of one Olga Adler (Vienna, Austria).
I have been assuming that Olly Adler was jewish, but I discovered there are quite a few Gentile Christian families in the midwest and south such as Kentucky (amongst hem several Olly's and Ollie's) named Adler. So all remains a mystery.
This photo has grown on me and I would love to settle my curiousity and know who she was, but of course there were thousands of Adlers on both sides of the ocean.I wondered if it was someone they knew before or someone they knew in America or she was a guest at one of the resorts (if so, which one?) where they performed.
Searching the Internet for possibilities, Ollie Olly and Olga Adler proves to be a fascinating name with lots of possibilties; An Olga Adler was held in contempt of court for inapropriate remarks in the fifties, another one related to UFO searchers that she had been cured of backpain by an alien in 1973, etcetera. But is one of them this young girl in the roaring twenties? If anyone has any idea or can tell me more -anything- circumstantially (such as about the location seen in the background) please let me know
Update: Location resolved. thanks to tdh4507
(Collection owned by C.Rivers, all rights reserved)
UPDATE sept 24 2010: After almost 8 years and many many Olly Adlers, the mystery is SOLVED.
In a passenger list for William Hartenberger, who arrived later then the rest of the Hartenbergers, the residency address given was with their Theatrical Agent, one Alfred Adler of 'World Entertainment Agency'. Adler!
Through Alfred Adler, I found that his wife's name was, according to US immigration, Erna Olly Adler, born december 16th 1898 (so she was older than she looked in the photo, she was already 31 here, who would have thought!) in Liegnitz, Germany. She emigrated to the US in 1921 and was married to Alfred Adler august 1, 1927 in Manhattan. So Olly is probably her maiden name.
According to the Social Security Death Index she died in New York in 1966.

I would love to get in touch with any family members and know more about their life.
My back is in major pain today and I have taken several baths and tried to take it easy but back pain is back pain. This book is a book about my area. It's pretty interesting to read the book and see the pictures, as it's always been home to me so I can relate the pictures and stories with where they are. Hope for a better back tomorrow. Hope eveyone had a great day today. Please View On Black.
WARNING: IF you add this shot as a favorite and I don't know you but you turn out to be a FREAK with a foot fetish I will block you!!
Today's Thought:
"Pain, reminds us that we are still alive."~
It was an absolutely gorgeous day today, so Carl wanted to take a ride and have a picnic. Decided to take the old timers (Pokey & Darla) with us, because (not to be morbid) not sure how much more time we'll get to spend with them 1 on 1. Darla was really excited to go, but after just a short walk at the state park, her back began acting up on her again and we had to carry her back to the car. Poor sweet old girl couldn't even stand long enough for a portrait with her boy Pokey. :( Will be calling the vet on Monday to make an appointment. I'm hoping I can talk the vet into a prescription of Prednisone. It worked wonders the last time, and at her age (12) I'm not really going to worry about the long term possible negative effects of Prednisone. I just want her to have as many good days as possible at this point.

I've been tagged (It was bound to happen)
.
So let's play that tag game, too many things you don't wanna know :
.
1. I'm 41 years old.
2. I work for the Belgian national gas company as a computer programmer.
I've been programming for 18 years now, currently developing in C#.
3. I love cooking and people say I'm very good at it.
Love Italian and Thai cuisine the most.
My style of cooking could be describe as very spicey, not in the sense of hot but
with plenty of herbs, packed with flavour.
I never follow a recipe, only read it, put it away and just give it a personal twist.
I cook dinner almost every evening.
4. I have 2 vertebrae discs which are too flat giving me backpains every single day.
Some days are worse than others, I don't take painkillers for it (yet).
5. I'm addicted to music, love all kinds of music, but not all music, I think most commercial music is crap.
Some of the styles I love:
° psychedelic
° space rock
° rock
° psychedelic rock
° jazz ( the slow kind )
° blues ( the very rudimentary Mississipi Delta kind )
° Electronic.
° Classical music ( instrumental only ).
° Lounge
° Dub
° Industrial Metal (like Tool)
Most people don't understand my music choice, because they stick to one category only.
6. I love walking but sometimes my one of my knees blocks and I can barely walk.
The problem goes away by given the knee enough rest.
7. I used to be a very shy boy when I was young.
8. I've been wearing glasses since the age of 7.
9. I've practised shotokan karate for 8 years but had to stop because of 4, the problem
with the knee could be a consequence of this as well.
I had a brown belt and only needed to succeed in 2 more exams for a black belt.
10. I started drawing at the age of 17 and although I never had any art lessons was good
at it from the start.
I do some oilpainting as well.
I make cut outs in MDF.
I make logos for companies.
I have my own company and website for all my artistic stuff : www.erroba.be.
11. I was a good skier 27 years ago ;) Never did it since.
12. I bought my first digital camera in june 2007 just before my second marriage.
13. Started really serious taking snaps (no not Schnapps ) when I discovered HDR in december 2007.
14. Joined flickr on january the 22th 2008.
16. I've just sold my first two images.
It's about time ;)
I've just been published with 6 photos in our local 'Mechelen Infogids 2009-2010'
a local bi-annual info guide of Mechelen city which is freely distributed to all
homes in Mechelen and surrounding communities.
I hope this will boost my sales a bit ;)
17. I think 16 points is way too few to actually tell much about one self.
Sorry, I'll make it a bit more funny.
18. I regularly suffer from sinus infections, I had an operation to straigthen the
inside of my nose in order to get rid of the reoccuring problem, it only gave
me improvement for the first two years.
The post operation days were a bit traumatic :
° Felt like suffocating when falling as sleep : The body has the natural reflex of breathing through the nose, but that was all closed with bandages...
° Sometimes you'll have to sneeze, you get medicine to avoid this, but they don't seem to be 100% full prove, guess what happens next... I'll spare you the details, please !
° It's only good for one thing, you loose 5 kilos in 5 days ! Can't be healthy.
Everything taste the same : like nothing at all ! I have this theory
about people that will eat almost anything, they sure don't taste much ... ROFL.
° Fifth day the bandages come off, guess what happens, I'll spare you the details again, please !
° First time you wipe your nose when you're back home, guess what happens, a plastic support frame comes out of your nose and it looks way too big to fit back in ! Sorry for those details, so please don't ask me about the previous ones, LOL !
19. I have a sleeping disorder. Catch about 3 to 4 hours of sleep every night.
Guess what? I'm a bit weary from time to time.
Sometimes I catch some good sleep and wake up like a different person.
20. I'm a zombie in the morning due to 19 and despite of this I think my morning
photoshoots have been the most productive ones.
21. I love a good glass of wine or a single malt wishky.
Stopped drinking wine in the evening since it is most likely the cause of 19.
22. I don't care if you're white, black, yellow, red or blue, gay or lesbian,
religious or not (*)
(*) Everything is ok with me as long as you don't cause any harm,
which can be very debateable...
23. I like a good discussion which is based on descent sane arguments.
24. I'm over emotional and can shed a tear real quick.
Really troublesome sometimes.
25. I am way to honest ;)
Also see 41.
26. 19 is caused by my overactive brain, can't make it stop to think.
Giving me plenty of difficult tasks is the key, I'll have them done
in no time and I actually sleep at night.
Can only work under pressure, only photography and art I do in a very
relaxed way, hell I need more !-)
27. I am a day-dreamer.
28. I have a short attention span due to 27 and 26.
29. I have a permenant ear damage due to too loud music in concerts nowadays.
I always have custom made earplugs with me to ensure this will not get worse.
I have a constant peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep noise in my left ear which will never stop.
30. I am not afraid of what comes after my death, since I'm quite sure that will be nothing and at last I will no longer hear that peeeeeeeeeep noise again and have a good amount of 'sleep' ;)
Feels like heaven already !
31. I love absurd humor.
32. I love a good movie, a good book, Sci-fi and fantasy, art & science.
Don't watch much TV, only documentaries and an occasional exception, I rarther
process a photo, masturbate, spend some time on flickr.
° note 1 : Masturbation doesn't make you blind, my eyes improved after the age of 7
and no I wasn't masturbating before that age, ROFL and no I didn't start at 7
° note 2 : when the word 'flickr' is pronounced in Dutch is means gay guy, yes read it loud and clear: H-O-M-O-S-E-X-U-A-L so be aware dear flickr friends ( pun intended ) next time you give your business card to a man wearing a pink shirt, ROFL.
Note : I'm not gay.
° note to myself : You can not be that honest !
33. Who is reading this shit, should fave my shot, ROFL !
I want my number 1 (Cries like a baby ;) )
34.I can be sarcastic from time to time.
35. There are a few things I hate about myself : If I get real angry I can shout real hard,
sorry I can't help it. I can be very stubborn.
36. I have a very good visual memory but a lousy one in every other respect.
Due to this, I can't usual remember what I was angry about in the first place ;)
Memory is mainly built up during sleep, give me complex tasks and I get better while
doing them, because my memory gets better too.
I've written programs that write programs for me, because the complex tasks get boring too, so the next thing I'll do is invent hard stuff for myself. Remember that all
my tools speed up my work and I have plenty of time.
You can hire me ;)
37. I believe in Zeus, Apollo, Ra, Thor, Baäl, Allah, God, Vaneshu...
No seriously, I believe in one God less than you do, so I'm an Atheist.
I'm sure I've already lost a few contacts, comments and faves because of that,
some people have already blocked me because of this, I can only say one thing 'How religious of you !-)'
There I lost some more perhaps.
40. I think we still live in the middle ages.
In a civilized world there is no place for :
° War
° Poverty
° Racism
° Sexism
° Corruption
° Child abuse
° Animal abuse
° Borders
° Organized religions
° Royalty
° Insurrance which is over expensive (also see my next point).
...
In a civilized world we would try to strive towards a single language.
All these things create groups, separation, friction, us and them, etc
People must play games and don't watch so much TV: it makes you sick.
41. Note for my insurrance : I'm a pathetical liar !
42. Is the answer to life and everything.
° For the people who read binary that's 101010, true false true false true false.
° For all other people, there are 10 people who can read binary :
Those who can and those who can't.
I'm 41 !
Go to 42.

About
This is the original version of the image with which I made my Aquaphobia image.
I upload this now, since Lamot is interested in buying the shot, something is moving here...
The shot
Standard 3 exposure HDR [-2,0,+2EV] at f/14 using the Sigma 10-20mm lens, on a tripod.
Photoshop.
° A small rotation and a crop.
° Shadows and highlights.
° Changed the hue of the clouds - which looked over blue - by using a hue/saturation/value adjustment layer and the luminosity
mask as a base for this layers' mask.

Today has been such a shitty day, I haven't been this cranky for months! GOD what am I annoyed today... and tired, so tired! Having this party tonight with my family because of birthdays and my graduation and I'm not looking forward to it. All of a sudden I sort of twisted my neck/back too... I just took an hour 'nap' and it got even worse I think, ouchhhh :( Can hardly move my neck! Well that definitely did not make my mood better...
Didn't even want to take pictures today but then I found this skirt in my mom's room (used to be mine!) and it has glitters on it and I just figured that it would photograph awesome.. sort of..
Bleh just want today to be OVER. And my neck/backpain as well, please @_@
Mm starting to dislike this project D:
& Explored! :)
Explore. July 22.09. #478. With thanks to Brenda for details.
The burning pains have reduced at backpain now instead. I prefer the former. With thanks for your continued healing prayers and support.
Due to long term health problems I am not taking on any more contacts. Please see my profile for more details.
I am very grateful for single invites but really don't want multiple ones. PLEASE no personal graphics, spinning or flashing comments. They stress my eyes.
Education seems to require a heavy backpack for students who want to go and do some studying on the beach. Can’t this Common Core be condensed into something they store on their phone, like the thousands of records they can listen to? Or are the chiropractors lobbying against that?
Was at the junkyard the other day.
With an aching back.
(Comes with the job.)
Was tempted to throw myself down in the container and let them get this roll rolling for a bit.
I was strongly advised not to.
This is just one of my stock photo for BFH (Bahrain Financial Harbor), i am still suffering from Headache and backpains cause by my Chiken Pox.
I miss my work and the outdoor,............really miss it.
Hope by next week i am already ok.
Happy week ends everyone!
My new year prayers for you, my dear friends, and for the welfare of mankind!
I open 2009 with my first attempt at serious macro photography. Learnt first hand the challenges of shallow depth of field and backpain due to hours of bending!
Loose garments are never that much fun!
Neither are backpains.
Getting photographed can be uncomfortable sometimes.
Especially when you have a train to catch, nicotine addiction to satiate or other general questions in mind.
That day, I was just a tourist though :)
Just Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Looking way older than I actually am, because of the blue filter I put in front of the lens and the backpains afflicting me since a few weeks.
Camera: Polaroid NOW
Film: Polaroid 600 Round Frames
I went to Gaja today for really no reason. I accidently took a wrong turn and ended up at this Wat. I was hoping to get a shot of this monk sweeping, but he stopped to rub his back right when I pulled the trigger. The shot's a little blurry as a result, but I really like the pose and crop out of camera so I don't want to pass it up.
Their long stint seeking alms outside the door of a church in Lagos over these two elderly ladies make their way slowly home! I had a shot of them earlier as they left the church grounds and this was taken further out into the square. I saw them again twice and over the course of an hour but still within a few hundred yards of the beginning of their walk! Old age has its burdens and I don't mean their bags! The little lady at the rear had to stop frequently to rest her back while the other plodded steadily on. God bless them both the years have been hard on them!
Every staff at The Shed Cafe is to wear this T-shirt.
Yet coffee drinking is believed to make your back pain worse.

Remember that lil cuty cuty girl running off with her kite?
Teehee. She's too adorable so you can imagine how I was chasing her around with my cam. LOL!
~~~
I'm looking forward for a better weekend soon and for another photowalk with Vanny. Woppeeeey! But hopefully, my backpains will subside before that. Unfortunately, yes, I got those kind of pain where after long walks or sitting, it's pretty disturbing and annoying. Sigh. Errr.
In any case, I do got few more portrait photoshoots yet to be scheduled with a few friends. Oh man, I need all the energy I can get so I better boost my hyper self with the best means possible --- like NOT forgetting my vitamins again and again. LOL
SpinaliS is a unique chair for healthy back
A unique movable seat on a spring ensures the mobility of the pelvis, strengthening abdominal and back muscles, keeping the spine in its correct position while preventing irreversible changes to the spine and so eliminating back pain. SpinaliS is the healthiest way to sit all-day long.
SpinaliS chairs loosen stiff neck
The moving seat “forces” you to straighten your back, have a correct head position and pull your shoulders back, reducing stress on the trapezoid muscles and loosening the stiff cervical spine. The constant movement of the seat eliminates any possible blockage, thus relaxing a stiff neck.
SpinaliS chairs straighten round backs
The movement of the seat straightens the back in the thoracic kyphosis area, restoring the physiological shape of the spine into its natural position (the natural curve of the spine in the shape of the letter “S”). Eliminating a round back also lessens pressure to organs in the chest, especially the lungs and stomach, which leads to improved breathing and digestion.
SpinaliS chairs activate weak muscles of the back and abdomen
The movable seat allows for body movement in all directions, so you are not forced to sit still – SpinaliS chairs encourage the involvement of all torso muscles, which leads to the strengthening of the back and abdominal muscles.
SpinaliS chairs reinforce deep stabilizing muscles
The stabilization of deep spinal muscles is all about strengthening muscles that stabilize the spine during all movements that we make. Deep stabilization plays an important role in protecting our spine against various loads and stress. Taking care of your spine requires constant exercising of deep stabilizing muscles, which in the sitting position is possible only on a Swiss ball or on a healthy SpinaliS chair.
SpinaliS chairs remove pain in the lower back
The movable seat of SpinaliS chairs swings forward while you lean over your desk, thereby allowing the spine to bend forward resuming lumbar lordosis at all times. Lumbar lordosis is important for optimal placement of the lumbar vertebrae as they are wedge-shaped (higher in the front, lower in the back). With the correct hip position there is a substantial reduction of pressure on the vertebrae and intervertebral discs, which allows for effective pain relief. In addition, the movable seat also reduces stress in the lower beck, unlike in the case of chairs with fixed seats, which can make sitting quite painful.
SpinaliS Apollo series chairs for Active Sitting:
www.spinalis-chairs.ca/spinalis-chairs/apollo/
"In 2014, I had a major surgery for cervical cancer and had difficulty getting my core muscles back and experienced numerous issues with back and neck pain. Between my job as a full-time artist (painter and photographer), old injuries and this surgery, I was struggling with neck stiffness and back pain. I am an active person and maintain my health through exercise, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, but the thing that was causing me the biggest issue were the days I was working at my computer. I was looking for a solution and a more supportive chair, and I am happy to say that I found it with Spinalis. I have been using my Apollo chair since May 2017 and I must say it is the best chair I have ever owned. Not only has it helped with rectifying my posture as it pushes me upward and forward, it no longer allows me to lazily slouch while I am working. It is impossible to sit âbadlyâ in this chair and am at the point now where I am almost unable to tolerate other chairs, as most chairs have slant backs and offer limited to no lumbar support. The whole process from dealing with Zaneta, to ordering, to putting the chair together, was a breeze and a pleasure. Zaneta cares about her customers and has an undeniable passion for the product she represents. I would not hesitate to recommend the Spinalis chair to anyone who is looking for a healthier back and a healthier life. This chair is well worth the investment, it is an investment in your health and without it, you have nothing." says Brandy Saturley.
Exploring the landscapes and popular culture of Canada, Canadian Visual Artist, Brandy Saturley
Brandy Saturley was born in Victoria, Canada in 1972. She is a prolific painter, travelling photographer, and multiple award winning Canadian artist. Saturley has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions at art fairs, in public and private art galleries, and in unique corporate venues across Canada.
âIn painting my goal is to create an initial visceral reaction and connection using something symbolically familiar that draws the viewer into the painting. As the viewer spends time with the painting the story unfolds as the details are discovered. Telling the story through the use of vivid colour and realistic details set on backgrounds of soft organic shapes and pattern. These paintings have been referred to as, 'Canadianism's on canvas or Canadian POP art'. I refer to my painting style as âCanadian Contemporary Realismâ, formed using a narrative process. With my compositions I focus on symbolism, dynamic structure, and a bold use of colour to communicate the story. My compositions are influenced by historical art, flags, sportswear, design, native culture, and the details of nature.â
DIALOGUE & DISCUSSION: Saturleyâs paintings of Canada, or âCanadianismsâ, began to gain exposure through group exhibitions in Victoria and Vancouver, then through live painting demonstrations at Canadaâs Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, and in solo gallery shows in Edmonton and Victoria. Sorry for the long abcense here on Flickr guys. Been very busy at work last couple of months and hurt my back about 2 months ago wich still isn't over yet. So making pics puts me into positions wich results into more backpain wich I'm trying to avoid ;) But wanted to share these cool Conan figures I picked up at my thrift a few weeks ago :)
