From the baby shoot on Monday :) the background could have been better, I still forget to look for distractions ....
香蒲
"Many parts of the Typha plant are edible to humans. Before the plant flowers, the tender inside of the shoots can be squeezed out and eaten raw or cooked.[16] The starchy rhizomes are nutritious with a protein content comparable to that of maize or rice.[17] They can be processed into a flour with 266 kcal per 100 grams,[4] and are most often harvested from late autumn to early spring. They are fibrous, and the starch must be scraped or sucked from the tough fibers.[18] Baby shoots emerging from the rhizomes, which are sometimes subterranean, can be picked and eaten raw. Also underground is a carbohydrate lump which can be peeled and eaten raw or cooked like a potato.[19] Plants growing in polluted water can accumulate lead and pesticide residues in their rhizomes, and these should not be eaten.[18]
The outer portion of young plants can be peeled and the heart can be eaten raw or boiled and eaten like asparagus. This food has been popular among the Cossacks in Russia, and has been called "Cossack asparagus".[20] The leaf bases can be eaten raw or cooked, especially in late spring when they are young and tender. In early summer the sheath can be removed from the developing green flower spike, which can then be boiled and eaten like corn on the cob.[21] In mid-summer when the male flowers are mature, the pollen can be collected and used as a flour supplement or thickener.[22]"

After about a two hour hike we finally got to this gorilla family. There were likely about 12-15 spotted(although likely more we didn't see). We saw silverbacks,, blackbacks, juveniles and babies.
Shooting was challenging given the density of the vegetation, many animals resting on the ground, and other photographers in often confined locations. Towards the end of our hour I finally got this juvenile to myself for a minute or two and was able to capture this special image.
Shooting Tips:
I think the best tip I can give you, is to be patient... and to make sure you're using the light to your advantage... I came back to this location, when I knew the light was just right... This location was the parking lot of a restaurant in a place called City Island off the Bronx...:))
I have always tried shooting common birds, hoping to create a different way of showing them...
This shot is called selective focus... You hold your camera and literally paste it to your face and eye, no space between you and the camera...
Your head and camera should become one... you should have a camera in continuous shooting mode... Don't make quick head movements... When you see what you want, don't move your head side to side... You can pan, but not side to side... that will create blur... Rather your movement is forward and backward... When I see a bird I want to capture, my movement is straight forward... all the time adjusting the zoom...
and shoot baby shoot!!!!
Have I great evening...

Rover School is in session...
Today in AstroSociology class, we learned about a strange custom from 21st century Earth culture. It was called Valentine's Day. I didn't quite understand it all, there was something about couples waiting a really long time to eat over-priced mass-produced food in poorly lit group dining areas. But there was also something about children decorating boxes and exchanging pieces of paper with insincere sentiments and licensed characters on them. And then also something about a winged baby shooting you with arrows. I didn't get it at all.
On a positive note, we got to see a really cool rover when some Grey:Tron representatives showed up. A few of their neat robots even brought us heart-shaped cards and treats! Maybe Valentine's Day is not so bad after all.

(I did not have a good idea for a Valentine's rover this year. This was totally Ben's idea.)
OK seriously ..... how can you not look at this and smile?
I went on my second baby shoot yesterday and I am SO thrilled with how everything went! First of all, Baby N is a dream baby. She turned 4 weeks old yesterday and slept through most of the shoot and when she was awake, she was content to lay there and pose. What a sweet pea!
Their family cats were so cute! They kept jumping on my basket and getting lost in my blankets. We were just about to shoo them away and when I decided to go with the moment. Definitely one of my favs from the session!!

Saturday morning I had the pleasure to meet up with MIke Berenson, David Kingham, Chris Kirby and Jim Casteel for an excursion into Rocky Mountain National Park in the hopes of shooting the Milky Way above Glacier Gorge and Long's Peak. Credit for the trip goes to Mike for the careful planning of both the timing and location, and I was thrilled to be invited to join this stellar group. Though I have been getting up early to shoot sunrises fairly often, this is only my second time out shooting stars, and I'm afraid my aging camera body isn't quite up for the task. I'm evaluating options to correct this as we speak, but until then at least you my flickr friends can enjoy the fruits of an exciting new photographic endeavor for me.
This shot is nearly at the end of our predawn morning. The moon, just out of the scene to the left, is lighting up the bright clouds, but the orange glow is light pollution from Denver. The Milky Way can be seen running diagonally just to the right of the bright clouds. I had no idea when I shot this that I captured an Iridian Flare which was a very pleasant surprise.
This is a blend of two images, one for the sky and one for the foreground as show below.
20mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 30 & 60 seconds.
Edit: I was showing this to my wife and zooming in to show her the noise and why I can't print it (large), when to my surprise I found another shooting star. This one is very small, so I flagged it up and modified the title.
Couldn't help myself :)
Took this one while packing my things for the baby shoot. I love my cable release :)
I can't decide if this is alright or really bad...if feels like something meant for Myspace. But seeing as I don't post these things on Myspace, might as well put it up here!

Now that mum Natalie has chosen her photos from her mum and baby shoot at the beautiful St James Lake in Brackley, I can now make her (and my) favourite image public.

Mudcracks, as you know, are a personal favourite and I’ve come to realize that I love them the most after rain, once they’ve dried into amazing colourful formations. In Paria, with the pink and red coloured earth, the way they dried was really unique, almost creating a leathery texture. And after these rains, life came in the form of these four baby shoots of grass, hence, I call this one Leather and Life.

Unoriginal title I know.
Taken from the Annapurna trail in the tropical jungle middle hills section of the walk. Alot of water was flowing at the time , however, much of it it was not readily accesable for this kind of shot which was a little frustrating.
The new year opens up with a baby shoot and a wedding coming up so I guess I won't have much time for landscapes *sigh*
We did our first baby shoot on the weekend. Now I have a whole new respect for all those beautiful baby shots out there! It's much harder than it looks.
We're lucky that our friends are very relaxed first-time parents. They were great to work with and were generous enough to let us post a couple of shots.
Something a little different for HBW.
Yesterday I got to spend the day photographing my friend's grandson. My first ever baby shoot. I told the Mom I would spend the day with her and take, edit, and give her a DVD full of photos for free, for practice. Well I knew I took alot of pictures, but when I came home and uploaded (after even deleting some in camera) there were 324. Yikes, that's a lot of editing!! But oh how fun!
I'll be posting more along the way and adding them to my blog as well.
