Taken across from the Flying J truckstop in Willard Utah. The Wasatch Range is right and out of sight the Great Salt Lake and Willard Bay are about a half mile to the left. A light snow over night left everything white topped.

Took this almost three years ago while crossing Wyoming. Not that different from the current weather. Shut down tonight near Evanston Wyoming. Should be in California by tomorrow night.

Took this shot nearly three years ago. I posted a picture recently of Echo Reservoir in Coalville Utah. This one is from the upper scenic view point on the Eastbound side of I-80. This is about 50 miles from my home in Salt Lake. I've stopped many times in my truck where the other trucks are parked.

Just as I entered Wyoming from South Dakota, I saw these three fillies trotting along the ridge and fence line, the strong freezing wind blowing their tails forward. Gives more meaning to a "tail wind".

Fortunately for me there wasn't much traffic on I-90 New Year's Eve, and a nice shoulder to pull over to. Just had to stop and shoot out of the drivers side window. I hardly got cold at all.

Decided to hold off on the sunset picture in New Mexico for now. Felt like going a different direction, like a white knuckle driving direction. Actually, I rarely get nervous over road conditions. If I'm feeling uncomfortable with the road conditions, I just park and wait until I feel that it's safe to drive again. This day the roads were icy and the wind was blowing, but I was taking it easy. My biggest worry is other vehicles driving fast and the possibility of them crashing into me.

I really like how this shot came out after processing, looking forward to reading your comments.

Took this in February on one of those days were I was stopping frequently to take pictures, posted something else, and as I do often forgot about it. Was looking back and ran across it. Anyway, this is looking down towards Round Valley, which is just north of Bishop California. This is on US-395 near the top of the long steep ascent. There's a couple of nice places to pull over and see the valley below. This is from further up the mountain than the picture I posted in April.

Here's a link to the earlier posted picture if your interested in seeing the difference in vantage point and time of year.

Took this last January in Bishop California. The highway was closed for a couple of days due to a snow storm. So far this year I've had it pretty easy, only a few days that I've had to drive in snow here in the western states. I'm sure that's going to change.

Northeastern Wyoming, New Years Eve. I saw these horses and instantly knew I wanted to try to get a picture of them walking, a strong wind was blowing their tails forward. I wasn't sure I'd get a decent picture because I was shooting almost directly towards the afternoon sun. I had time for 3 shots, I posted one already of the three fillies on top, (flic.kr/p/QLd1ew) this was my first shot, then two more before they moved directly between me and the sun. The third picture taken was almost the same as the first one posted, but the last two horses were nose to tail, no spacing. Anyway, pleased I got even one good picture under the circumstances, two was a bonus. This one is my favorite, and most difficult because the stallion was down in the shadowy area, so I saved it for last.

Funny how a picture can lie. Looks like I've taken this picture from some remote area, when in fact I'm in the middle of a very populated part of Washington State. Just happen to be from this spot, and the right amount of zoom on my lens, no buildings or signs of people are visible.

This is Mount Rainier, and was taken when traffic on WA-167 in Pacific, Washington stopped (it's does that a lot). Looking at my map I'd say the distance is about 40 miles "as the crow flys". (If a crow ever flew in a straight line, what a strange saying when you think about it.) Went from Pacific to Bellingham WA and now on my way to Denver. Hopefully I'll have a few photo ops on the way.

About the title:

In 2005 a proposal by several American Indian tribes was to change the monolith's name to Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark. The name change was not approved. Devils Tower remains the official name.

When I first started truck driving in 2009 I detoured off I-90 in Northeastern Wyoming to see Devils Tower, the same Devils Tower that was used in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. My digital camera back then was a little Nikon Coolpix that had maybe a 3 megapixel sensor. Anyway, decided since I had a little extra time on this load I'd do a revisit with much better equipment.

Took this about a month ago off WA-18 near North Bend, Washington. That was the day after a big snow storm and the folks at my delivery in Kent took the day off. So I dropped the loaded trailer at our drop yard in Pacific, grabbed an empty trailer and then picked up a new loan at a different shipper and headed to Spokane.

I love this area, the trees are huge and almost create a tree canyon. This was a one handed point and shoot, easy to do with my camera always beside me.

Took this picture just before Lone Pine, California off US-395 heading north. Very cold that day, the sun never quite breaking through the clouds. On a clear day you'd see mountains in the background. Ended up only making it to Bishop, California because 395 and CA-6 were both closed due to a winter storm. I sat in Bishop for a day and a half before CA-6 became passable.

Stopped just before the Weed Regional Airport to get an unobstructed view and picture of Mount Shasta. When I'm out West, which is most of the time, I drive by Mount Shasta pretty regularly as I seem to get stuck on the I-5 lane back and forth from Southern California to Portland or Seattle. I always look forward to seeing this mountain, and frequently take pictures when the light and or clouds make it a bit more interesting. Today was one of those days, decent light and wispy clouds were enough to get me to pull over. I almost left this in color, but really liked how it came out in B&W.

Still feeling a bit sickly, but fortunately the past few days have been easy, work wise, plenty of time on my schedules, so getting lots of sleep and rest. Thanks for all of the well wishes, much appreciated my friends.

This is just barely east of town (Rock Springs, Wyoming) on the south side of I-80 you can see this prominent chimney rock formation. Probably has a name, but I couldn't find it on Google. Anyway... I drive by here several times a year and always enjoy taking a look. I've taken pictures before, but never at the right time of day, or no clouds. I think I got everything I wanted with this shot.

This was taken in March of 2014 and if look closely you can see patches of snow. Wyoming is a windy, a lot, so while it gets plenty of snow, it's often blown away. Don't ask me where it goes, but you can have a couple of feet of snow one day, and it can be blown away the next.

Black and White or Color? Usually not a hard decision, but when it's a toss up I usually go with the B&W version. This was one of the rare times I really couldn't decide, so I'm posting both. The color version is the picture prior. Before editing I usually make a copy, mostly because I sometimes try a couple of different looks and then decide which I like best. So I did the color version first, but rather than just converting it to B&W, I went to work from scratch to create this B&W version.

The signs alternating messages, "EXTREME BLOWOVER RISK" and "WIND GUSTS 60+ MPH" seemed about right. My GVW was just under 80,000 lbs and I was getting pushed about pretty good. The temperatures had been warm, in the 50's, so the roads were dry, even so many drivers were finding places to park for the evening. I started my day at 3 AM, so even though I'd driven less than 200 miles, the early delivery and then a pick-up at Coors in Golden Colorado had pretty much done in my productivity for the day. Took this shot from the parking lot of the Summit Rest Area about 18 miles East of Laramie, Wyoming. It's the highest elevation on I-80 at over 8,000 feet.

Pulled over this morning when I saw these Elk crossing a fence and heading up a large hill. I had just left Evanston Wyoming where I'd spent the night. Later I saw large herds of pronghorn antelope and deer, but I don't see Elk that often, so it was nice to stop and take a few pictures before heading on to Denver.

Snow in the Seattle area created a few problems Monday morning, my delivery in Kent fell through, the customer stayed home. So, after waiting three hours my company let me drop of the trailer at our Pacific yard, and I went back to Kent for a load to Boise. Made it as far as North Bend, not far, not far at all. Chains required beyond there, and my company doesn't want us to chain up, they'd rather pay us to wait. So I went to the TA truck stop, of course no parking left, so I went to the shoulder of the eastbound on-ramp and parked for the evening. It was starting to get dark, but wanted to get a picture of the mountains and storm clouds, bumped the ISO up and used my steering wheel to help steady my camera, then snap, snap. Took off this morning but only made it to Pendleton, Oregon. I-84 was completely shutdown, so here I am until tomorrow, and Boise???? Hopefully!!!!

Here's a link to the mountains directly behind the TA, check it out if you want, I'm not going to officially post it.

My weekend home is over and heading back to Los Angeles, but not without a few stops along the way. The weather has been really crazy the past couple of days. Single digits in Salt Lake at times this weekend, then into the 40's last night and today, with lots of wind. Took this down South, but before Beaver. My GPS said I was in Red Point. Anyway, this picture pretty much sums up what much of today looked like.

In Cheyenne Wyoming tonight, delivering butter to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in the morning. I haven't been to Wyoming for at least six months, so I was looking forward to the change of scenery, unfortunately I wasn't seeing anything that grabbed me photographically until I got to Elk Mountain, and was surprised to see a herd of Elk, at least 50 in the herd. Obviously I pulled over and took some pictures. Not the greatest light, sunset and the clouds blocked most of the light. Mostly females, and just a few young males, no large bulls, but still I was happy to see the herd.

I did get some closer pictures using a bigger lens and may post one or two of them someday.
