Ok one more moose shot then I will post something else. He just happened to be right by the road saying hi to everyone.

He came out of the woods to a marshy/wet area to get a big drink...I could hear him slurping the water!!! It was at dusk.

This bullfrog came up near the dock at Commonwealth Lake, and held position for a good 5 minutes before moving on.

We took a trip into Birmingham today. Didn’t get a chance to go in while the Commonwealth Games were on so I thought we should take the opportunity to go and see this cool sculpture before it moves on at the end of this month. Had to do some shadow work to lift out the detail, but the iPhone did well!

Just south of Spray Lake in Kananaskis Alberta is this pretty little pond. The view is looking south down the Spray Valley.

Continuing my horns and antlers set with this bison bull photographed in Badlands National Park. His hind legs look like he may have some reptile DNA, but it's just dried mud.

A big thank you to all Flickr friends for your visits.

Thanking you in advanced for all your kind feedback & favourites.

Have a wonderful day and keeping Smiling be Happy!

Thank you

I'm sure no one expected me to post a moose in my horns and antlers series. But here he is. A pretty impressive bull moose found in Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado.

Antlers are the fastest growing tissue in any mammal and can grow an inch a day. A big bull moose can grow an 80-pound rack in a summer, adding a pound of bone a day.

Market day at Heho, Myanmar

I didn't do all so well with the elk rut at RMNP this past fall, but I did have a couple of exquisite sessions with moose. Be sure and check him large with a couple of clicks.

Thinking back on the lighting challenge here - butt light - I did have that two mornings in a row: praying, begging the fellow(s) to give it just a smidge of body turn or head turn to pick up that sunlight. Patience and luck are key.

Estimated weight 900 to 1,200 pounds.

He is a real big boy.

Got the shot and slowly walked backwards. I love the sensation, it makes me feel alive :)

Everyone knows that the largest North American Mammal is the bison, right? More specifically, the Wood Bison...right?

But there is another mammal, the Northern Elephant Seal, that breeds, and gives birth on the coast of North America. And it spends a few weeks each year lying around on North American coastal beaches while molting.

As for size, a smaller adult Elephant Seal Bull weighs in at over 3,000 pounds. The largest ones tip the scales at over 5,000 pounds. A larger bull Wood Bison weighs in at around 2,200 pounds.

I'm just sayin'.

Taken fifteen years ago, this is one of my first ever shots of a bull moose. Found him near Grand Lake, Colorado.

The last of my oldies series. I'm heading back to that area tomorrow hoping to find some of his descendants, so this is my last post for a couple of weeks.

I'm back in random mode. No theme/series until I can think of one.

As summer creeps along, and even though it's early in the season, I'm already looking forward to autumn, and particularly, our annual visit to the elk rut. This shot is from that event in Rocky Mountain National Park three years ago.

Seen on a boat trip with other members of our photo club.

A bull Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) walks near the picnic tables at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Early European settlers in North America called this animal an "elk" which is a word usually used in Europe for a moose. This causes some cofusion among some European visitors. The other name used for elk is wapiti which is a Shawnee word which means "white rumped deer" or "white deer". To make things even more confusing, Cervus elaphus has also been called Cervus canadensis and that name is still in use by some. There are 3 subspecies of elaphus recognized currently in the United States. Of these subspecies, the Rocky Mountain elk have the largest population and the widest distribution.
