Taken at our friends' lovely lakeside property at Nungurna in Victoria just down from Lakes Entrance.
Lakes Entrance is a seaside resort and fishing port in eastern Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 320 kilometres (200 mi) east of Melbourne, near a managed, artificial channel connecting the Gippsland Lakes to the Bass Strait. At the 2016 census, Lakes Entrance had a population of 4,810.
The township was originally named Cunninghame, the Post Office of that name opening on 5 February 1870. It was renamed Lakes Entrance on 1 January 1915.
Lakes Entrance, which lies almost at sea level, can be reached from Melbourne via Bairnsdale and the town of Kalimna to the north-west by a stretch of the Princes Highway, which snakes down and around a point protruding into the Gippsland Lakes known as "Jemmy's Point". Views of The Entrance and of the Lakes can be seen from various look-outs on Jemmy's Point. The Princes Highway leaves the north-east side of the town through hilly countryside towards Nowa Nowa and Orbost.
Lakes Entrance is predominantly a fishing and tourism-driven town; the main beach front is a harbour for commercial fishing and recreational watersport operations. The surf beach is patrolled by the Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) between November and March every summer, with lifeguard patrols from late December to late January. The waterfront is populated by the fishing fleet and two floating restaurants—Ferrymans Seafood Cafe and The Floating Dragon Dockside Restaurant. The main street consists of shops, caravan parks, a Woolworths supermarket, a Target Country store that opened in 2007, a KFC and a McDonald's restaurant that opened in September 1997. The town's main residential areas lie farther inland.
Lakes Entrance has a number of camping and caravan parks, and free camping spots in Colquhoun State Forest.
Nearby major towns include Bairnsdale and Orbost. Lakes Entrance falls within the Shire of East Gippsland.
Other towns include Swan Reach, Johnsonville, Kalimna, Nicholson, Metung. Lake Tyers and of course Nungurner.

This is my local park and it is very close to my home in the Hills District. It is a place of great serenity and tranquility. When my children were little (and not so little!) I would often bring them here for walks, picnics and to feed the ducks.

This particular 1938 Ford coupe, with its groovy hot-rod style of paintwork, has been seen around the streets of Sydney's Hills District, as well as on the Central Coast of NSW, since at least 2010 when I first discovered it.
Photographed here at the iconic 'Rattle & Hum' car show, held each June at Castle Hill, in the northwest of Sydney.

Took this on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Strange. It may be rain or snow but I dont know. Looks like a giant squid. I wonder did anyone else see it? Im sure someone will have an answer.
I removed two telegraph wires which were running across the bottom of the mountain but thats all. You can see slight traces of them left and right. I have several pics of it.

The 'Tom Uren Trail' that commences in a leafy laneway beside these 1800s terrace houses, is a tribute to the great soldier and politician, Tom Uren (1921-2015), who fought valiantly to stop the destruction of all the historic homes in this suburb at a time when the world was less conscious of preserving the past.

Palm Beach is about 45 minutes drive from the Sydney CBD, and it takes me about 50 minutes to get there from the Hills District of Sydney. The seaplane takes 20 minutes, lol.
On this jetty is the 'Boathouse Cafe' with its views across The Pittwater and Palm Beach. It is an awesome place for a flat white coffee, and one of my favourite locations in Sydney. Here are some images of 'The Boathouse':

The World Lost A Legendary Artist This Week

Night view of Kallmünz, Bavaria state, Germany. I was somewhat disappointed by the lighting, the fortress on top of the hill wasn't lit at all, no big deal. The surprise came the next morning.....normally the biggest annoyance for me traveling in Germany is the shelf toilet, super convenient for collecting stool samples! :

Again no big deal... but the morning after I took this photo I had a much more harrowing experience, a few minutes checking out of my hotel I was stopped by the police even before I left Kallmünz, given a alcohol breath test and had my passport and luggage searched for no reason at all, of course they didn't "find" anything and I wasn't doing anything suspicious, but I am wondering if this is a regular procedure nowadays, far from any border...I can't imagine that happening here in the USA or even anywhere in Europe, stopping somebody for no reason and searching their belongings far from a border, what the f@#?

That is a reasonable conclusion once you see the two huts and the swimming white ducks there even though the recluse is nowhere to be found... The truth being, some people are still left behind economically despite the Chinese government already succeeded in taking 700 million out of poverty in China.

It is here just off this point that the Irish and Celtic meet together with a vengence when huge storms develop out in the Bay of Biscay caught between the west coast of France and the north coast of Spain. Driving s/e winds push the storms in the direction of the south coast of Ireland where it brings unpredictibly severe gales and violent seas that meet the land here and pound it with an uncontrollable fury.
I got caught in San Sebastien in southern Spain last January by such a storm. I was trying to catch a ferry from Santander to Cork in southern Ireland but all sailings were cancelled because of a storm. I ended up driving north through Spain and France to catch a ferry from Caan to Southampton and then driving to Hollyhead in north Wales to catch the ferry to Dublin. It added a lot of miles and two days and nights travelling. I was glad to get home! Just shows how little control we have over the weather!
Fishing is the main occupation in this area and the little village of Slade with its old pier here on the Hook, is where the fishing boats head out every evening to fish the seas which is something they have done for centuries.
If you go and sit in any of the old pubs around here you will meet old hardy men who spent their lives fishing off this coast and listen to their emotionally filled stories and of the friends and relations they lost to the storms. They talk of the "blue madness" and when you ask them why they risked their lives in such away they will tell you that there was nothing else open to them here apart from immigration and, even today driving out the for 40 miles on the peninsula there isnt much really apart from the deserted ruined houses and the odd holiday cottage. There are very few trees and any that do survive are like grotesque sculptures that have been shaped by the wind which is constantly blowing here. It is a wild but very beautiful place.
Hook is famous for its unique lighthouse and centre and also Loftus Hall, both of which which have created a lot of employment here especially amongst the younger people which means that they dont have to go further afield for employment or risk their lives on the dangerous seas.

I worked with some young men in Dublin and they came from Killybegs, Co. Donegal. There were 4 of them and they had all been fishermen. They said they gave it up because they had lost too many of their friends through drowning. However, once May came around they all went back to the fishing as they said they missed it and their fellow trawlermen and the friendships and they would do it for the Summer months only.
Such is the madness I suppose!
Ireland is not a great place for sea shantys so this is a song from Grimbsy in Lincolnshire on the Humber estuary, and tells the story of a drowning catastrophe of over 70 souls that occured there in the early 1900`s.

This is the Oklahoma hybrid tea-rose. Super fragrant.
All dressed up with her double petals. First grown in 1963.
She is now the state flower of Oklahoma in the USA.
But this one lives along Pretoria Road, at Hornsby, in northern Sydney.

Birkenhead Point has developed into one of Sydney's biggest marinas, as well as being home to a massive shopping precinct which specialises in 'brand outlets'.
There are magical cafes overlooking the water. And Birkenhead Point is housed in a series of historical buildings that once comprised the famous Dunlop Tyre Factory, founded in 1900. The factory closed in 1977.
