In Module 8 I began to experiment with blurring and layering for that module’s exercise. It was a bit challenging but with practice and patience I was able to achieve the dream like effect I intended. For the fifth photograph in the portfolio and to represent what I felt was my best work in this course, I chose this photograph. I feel this photo is my best work in this course. I applied many elements of what I learned into this photo. In the original version of this photo I was able to compose the shot in the right angle, elevation, and lighting that allowed to capture the stream with a mirror like effect. There is a good amount of horizon, but still maintained a good balance of sky and land. I was able to use this photo in a Black and White assignment as well. In that image, the original photo took an eerie and desolate effect. A complete change of feeling by simply removing the color. The version of that photo in this image changed once again. To truly give the image an artistic look, I made the stream stand out and bring out the color but maintain the reflections in the water. The color contrast between the stream and the gray sky really brings out the blue color in the water. I feel I met the artistic impression I was trying to achieve. I wanted to apply a blurred dreamy effect without losing the clarity of the water. The stream needed to maintain peaceful and the feeling of a clear path for the viewer. By isolating the blur to only the area outside the water, I was able to maintain the reflections of the trees in focus despite the blur to actual trees. I wanted to bring in some of the eerie feeling I achieved in the B&W assignment but still maintain the green color of the grass and trees. The trees had the right mixture of leaves and bare branches to give that eerie but warm feeling. I truly feel this image is art because this image can be viewed as spooky and desolate to some viewers while others view it as peaceful, warm, and calming. Although the stream is narrow and short in length, the way it converges and curves away gives the feeling that the it goes off into the distance. I feel this image captures the right mixture and intensity of colors to give the photo many impressions.
