11 April 2012 is the 185th birth Anniversary of Mahatama Jotiba Phule. JNUSU salutes the glowing legacy of Mahatama Jot1ba Phule, the mtrepid crusader of anti-Brahminical struggles who championed women's education .

Questioning the dominant declarations of his times, Babasaheb Ambedkar questioned the notion that there was a readymade 'India' waiting to be discovered. More than half a century has passed since the birth of our Republic. but vve still live 1r an lndta where dalits continue to form the bulk ofthe landless poor in India. Their struggles for soc1al justtce and economrc r:gnts are met with feudal violence. Even in times of the human tragedies, be it the tsunami or .
the eartquake disasters, dalits are remtnded that they are "less than human". As we look around us, the situation of the daltts are a stark reminder of lndta's semi-feudal reality. The onslaught of globalisation and liberalisation has only helped to sharpen-the rampant unemployment, staNation, dispossession and devastation thathas hit Indian agriculture and industry, has left the weakest sections of our society more vulnerable than ever before. The smell of burning flesh at Jhajjar, Gohana, KahairlanJi, Mirchpur cannot leave us with any !llusions aboutthe vicious Brahminical intentions of the ruling forces today. Indeed, if we continue to deny equality in our social and economic life, our political democracy cannot but be at peril. .
Let us recall that Dr. Ambedkar also gave shape to the Indian Constitution. He spearheaded the battle with the Hindu .
fundamentalist lobby over the Hmdu Code Bill, which Dr. Ambedkar felt would empower Hmdu women and loosen the shackles of react1on. When the Nehru Govt surrendered before the reactionary orthodoxy, he resigned from the Nehru cabinet in protest In times as th1s sJch radical content of Dalit assertion needs to be further heightened, and must not be diluted in th~ face of mu t1ple manouevours by the saffron brigade and the proponents of corpratocracy. .
Now, more than ever. we need to reclaim and reassert Dr. Ambedkar's legacy-a legacy of freedom. of equality. Not merely .
of lip·seNice to oolitical equality. nor only of soc1al JUStice divorced from economic JUStice -that spoke of the equal distribution of materia~ wealth tn soctety Babasheb believed in a radtcal content of democracy whtch asserted that the task of philosophy is to transform the world: that pnvate ownership of property 1s the basis of exploitation. He called for the nattonal1sation of land in India_as a necessary step to lay the foundations of Dalit empowerment and emancipation. .
